pu,sgobits2 LUBIN -Ruth Lubin, was born May 22, 1911, in St. Louis, Missouri, the oldest of five children. She died on March 4, 2008, having lived a remarkable and fulfilling life as a teacher, writer and artist. She was truly a legend in her time and an inspiration to all who knew her. At the age of 15, Ruth had to quit high school to help support her family. At the age of 42 she graduated from UCLA with a BA, and received a Master of Fine Arts from USC at 49. Ruth taught Art for 36 years at a number of High Schools. After teaching Art at Arcadia High School for 23 years, she formally retired, but she ke pt on creating, teaching, writing and lecturing until well into her eighties. In 1994, at the age of 82, she won the title of Ms. Senior California, and she finished in the top 10 in the National Ms. Senior America Contest. She created numerous sculptures and paintings, many of which were displayed at a One-Woman Exhibit at The Arcadia Historical Society in May of 1999 and are on permanent display there. Her sculptures also have been exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute and the Los Angeles County Art Muse um. One of her poems was chosen as a winner in an International Poetry Contest held at the 7th Annual World of Poetry Convention. In her busy life, she still found time to be a volunteer at the Andrus School of Gerontology at USC, helping with education and research on aging. Ruth Lubin was a long-time resident of Arcadia, California. She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Berger and Mardene Conrad, both residents for over 30 years of Palos Verdes Estates, California, along with six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a sister Marjorie Wilder of New York and a brother William Livingston of Oregon. Hello. My name is Dede Krenz and Mrs. Lubin was my art teacher at Arcadia High School. I graduated in 1969.
I live in Phoenix, Arizona and this evening a tv commercial aired in support of teachers, encouraging viewers to think back on their most influential teachers. I thought of Ruth Lubin.
As I went to the internet wondering if I'd find anything, I thought she must have gone long ago. I burst out crying when I saw her name and that she lived until 2008! Amazing.
And I can utterly picture her. Then I saw her picture and just as I remembered.
Mrs. Lubin taught me anything and everything I might know about art. No, I am not a professional artist, but still it's a big part of my life. She taught with love, passion and zeal, and will never forget "draw what you know, not what you see".
I know it's late to extend these thoughts. I just felt so compelled to. Mrs. Lubin was truly a great and fun person and teacher.
Best Regards,
Dede

Ruth Lubin was one of the most amazing teachers I've ever encountered. I was in her art classes at Arcadia High School from 1965-68. She had boundless energy, talent and enthusiasm. She was the first teacher to tell many of us that we could be whatever we wanted to be. She got in touch with me in the mid 90's & she shared her poetry and hopes for winning the Senior Ms America contest...
Thank you, Ruth. I will never forget you!

I'm so sorry to hear about Ruth's passing. I remember her well, I was a student at Arcadia High School (1964-1967) but didn't have her as my art teacher. Several friends did though. Visited her a few times at her home years later... Always was a wonderfullly entertaining and interesting person to be around. She was a profound influence on many of her students and will be greatly missed. I will always remember her fondly.
