HOUSTON LAWRENCE HAYNES The life of Houston Lawrence Haynes began on August 13, 1949 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the only child born to Mary Lee Burton and the late Lawrence Haynes. Houston grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois and attended East St. Louis High School. While excelling in athletics, some of his notable accomplishments include the 18 year undefeated Shot Put Record, an Honorary Mention Outstanding Football Player, Illinois State Wrestling Championship and All Conference Football Award. He accepted a football scholarship to attend Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. In 1990, Houston was inducted into the Illinois Clyde C. Jordan Hall of Fame. Houston stated that "athletic programs molded his character and served as a vehicle for his higher education." In 1974, Houston graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Art degree in Education and obtained a Master of Education degree in 1979. He began his teaching and coaching careers at Wichita Heights High School, teaching U.S. History, coaching football, and serving as Head Baseball Coach. Houston moved to California in 1987 and married his soul mate, Deborah Ann Kimbrough. He continued his teaching and coaching careers with the Compton, Los Angeles and Lake Elsinore Unified School Districts from 1987-2007. In 1991, he was appointed the first Head Football Coach for the Temescal Canyon Senior High School in Lake Elsinore, California. Houston was most proud of his four children and his five grandchildren. Houston will be remembered by his family and friends for his trustworthy, loyal, caring, loving, competitive and independent spirit and for his love of football, children, music, travel and shopping. Houston expired Friday, November 23, 2012. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Deborah; mother; 2 sons; 2 daughters; and 5 grandchildren. Coach Haynes was my football coach back at Temescal Canyon in the early 90's, I remember a few of his "quotes" and can still hear his voice in my head to this day. He had a great impact on my life and taught me many great lessons. Im sorry for the family's loss of this great man and will always remember him.

I just found out today January 21, 2013 about Houston's passing. I was priviledged to have the opportunity to be among the close friends that Houston had in Wichita Kansas. Houston was one of the most beautiful people that you could ever know. I never saw him become angry or ever raise his voice. He always had a smile on his face regardless of the situation. I am most honored and blessed to have had the opportunity to have Houston in my life.

It gives me great comfort to come here and see all of the people my father has touched during his time here on Earth. I see some familiar names, and some not so familiar, and it makes me happy that everyone knew what a fun and sincere person Daddy was. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and stories; Michael and I are grateful for you all! Daddy we miss you, we love you and we hope the Haynes' kids are making you proud up there!

Houston Haynes was one of the best people I ever had the good fortune to know. I enjoyed the time with him from the opening of TCHS to the time I moved to another school in 2002. He was a man who possessed integrity and honesty. He was always thoughtful of others. It is a comfort to know he is with our Lord Jesus Christ and sometime we will all be together again.

I have so many great memories of Coach Haynes. We were playing a sophomore football game at Heights. It came over the pubic address system that the Cincinnati Reds were leading in a game in the World Series and Greg Liebe let his approval be known. We ended up losing the football game. The next day in practice Coach Haynes was grilling us and called out Greg for being more intested in the World Series than in the football game. He asked all of us, if we think Johnny Bench (the catcher for the Reds) goes into the dug out and asks how Greg Liebe is doing at Heights. Pete Campbell could not take and any longer and started laughing. We were all on the ground laughing. We loved him!

Coach Haynes was a great man and coach! His willingness to let me play in spite of my foolish antics was the last time that football was fun. Please believe me when I tell you I was a handful, but he believed in me and I learned a lot about being a good teammate and becoming a man from him. I will miss him.

Coach Haynes was my first football coach years ago at Heights. His sense of humor will NEVER be forgotten! He could be critical of something you did wrong, but he'd always do it in a way that, not only did you understand WHY it was wrong but ALWAYS with a wit that made us smile and laugh at ourselves.

God Bless Coach.

MIkie.. Coach Elder just emailed me... Im stunned! I loved your dad and even though its been since you was 5 or so and all of us worked w/ your dad! I still felt like he was one of my best friends! we had a great bunch of coaches there at heights when we all worked with Houston. Your dad was a good man and we had a great time coaching Football and baseball together at Heights! We both kind of grew up together way back when. When I worked with you mike, a few years back and we called your dad a few times it was like he was back home here with us! You know how I felt about your dad! call me sometimes Mike... love to talk with you again.... sorry I didn't know! sorry mike for the loss of your dad. tell your mom hello too

Wow! Time is marching on! I've just learned of coach's passing. I surely remember the debates we had in history class and the lessons on the gridiron. Coach gave me one of my first lessons about sacrifice for something you really want. R.I.P. and sympathy to the family. He will be greatly missed.

Papa Bear, I will miss you greatly. The great times and memories we have shared. One day I will write a book and our laughs will be shared with many. The only problem is we would get into trouble for 99% of the stories that we have experienced. You have been like a father to me for the past 18 years and will miss that special bond that we had. I will cherish the memories and laugh from time to time as I hear your voice yelling at the kids. RIP dear friend. Coach Edwards

I never had Mr. Haynes as a teacher, but my locker was right across from his classroom, and I'll never forget how cool he was, and always gave me a hard time! Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

Today's Celebration of Life service was a real blessing. Coach Haynes would have been proud. With all that was said and shared... surely he knows what a big role he played in our lives!! Like the songs we sang today, we know there are "No Tears in Heaven" and Coach Haynes is shouting from above "If You Could See Me Now". I take great comfort knowing I WILL see him again one day. Love You Coach Haynes!!!

Coach Haynes was my colleague of 10+ years in the PE Dept at TCHS. I will miss his warm hello, "Hey, Sugar, How you doin'?" I will also miss chatting with him over every day happenings around campus. Coach Haynes once handed me the book, "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff." He always took care of us!!! Made me laugh a lot too! I will miss him greatly.

I was deeply saddened by the news that we lost Coach Haynes. I went to Wichita Heights when he was an educator and football coach there. Though I never had him as a teacher, he always had something positive to give each student he came in contact with. He was admired and loved by many. His family and loved ones will be in my thoughts and prayers.
