Richard R. Garverick, of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 22, 2012 with his family by his side.

He was born in Harrisburg, on Aug. 21, 1947, he was the son of Harriet (Wiland) Garverick of Mechanicsburg, and the late Roy Garverick. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Louise (Lawver) Garverick.

Richard was a 1965 graduate of Central Dauphin High School, earned his BS in Social Studies from Edinboro State College in 1969, Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Shippensburg State College in 1971, Administration Certification in l974 and Reading Specialist Certification in 1979 from Western Maryland College and his Paralegal Certification from Penn State in 2003. He taught in the Gettysburg School District for 35 years from 1969-2004, both third and sixth grades, served as the district science coordinator, taught science and classroom management seminars at Gettysburg College and Western Maryland College, supervised and observed student teachers from Gettysburg College and served on the Pennsylvania Needs Assessment Visiting Evaluation Team. His memberships include Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1562 in Gettysburg, American Legion Post 202 in Gettysburg, 32nd Degree Mason with Good Samaritan Lodge 336 Free & Accepted Masons in Gettysburg and Zembo Shriners in Harrisburg, PA. Richard served his community with his service to York Adams County Drug and Alcohol Council as Chairman and Secretary, Gettysburg Little League as Secretary and Vice-President, AYSO linesman and referee, Hanover Lyric Band and the Boy Scouts of America: Troop 79, District, and Council Advancement Committee and Long Range Planning Committee. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and was a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies Fan.

In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by his son, Neal Garverick and his wife Kristine of Dillsburg, and two grandchildren, Harrison and Hayden Garverick.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012 with his Pastor, Rev. David Wright, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service on Friday at a reception in the church social room. A private interment will be held at a later date.

The education world has lost it's best teacher, he was the best sixth grade teacher of all. All the kids loved him, even the ones who hated school. May God accept him into heaven without any doubts, he did great works here on earth.

I got to know Dick in his later years with the Shrine Club. I particularly remember his sense of humor, at least to me, and his sincere concern for what the club could do for disabled children in Adams County. I will miss him.
