Field of Dreams:
It was the mid 1970's and my Dad's softball team, the" Cavaliers", were playing in the greater Olney softball leauge championship. We were playing the dreaded Colonials. They were our arch rival and always had the better team.
This time thing were going to be different. I was the bat boy and the water boy. We had battled them to the point where we were ahead in the last inning of the deciding game.
With two outs and I believe one guy on base; the batter for the Colonials hit a rather routine fly ball to center field area of the field. -- and guess who took a few steps to the right, and with his standard two handed grab, snagged the final out? --- You guessed it-- it was one "Coke" Verrillo.
And as the Phillies of 1980 and 2008 did everybody ran onto the field and jumped on my dad. It was just unbelievable. David had beaten Goliath and captured the championship.
What was always in his grasp but never fulfilled became reality. A softball championship.
As he told of all as some point in our lives -- "everybody needs a place in the sun"
Well that day and in that time on that field was his day in the sunshine.
After the game he told me and my brother (like he did a thousand times before) Did you see how I made the final out -- WITH TWO HANDS. My brother and I nodded and said "yes Dad we know"
A few years ago I was down at Cardinal Dougherty watching my daughters high school soccer team play. Right across the street from Dougherty was Sturgis field. The field my Dad won the championship game on. Before going to the game I stopped in the parking lot walked over to the edge of 2nd street and gazed across to the field and the spot where my Dad made the final out.
I stopped and thought to myself how cool would it be if we could go back to that time and that place and play the game again and relive that moment -- sort of like the movie "Field of Dreams"
ps -- if we played that game recently we could have put the final out on "You Tube" LOL

Coke was a one of a kind- he would be talking to a customer on the phone, giving out payroll checks, assigning his guys jobs to go to for the next week, telling stories or jokes to anyone in earshot range and still be playing cards at the weekly game in the office all at the same time! He was multi-tasking long before they coined the phrase. I can't say how many people I have meet over the years who have told me about how Coke helped them out with a personel problem just because that was what he knew was the right thing to do. He will be missed by all who knew him.

My dearest Uncle,
You were a loving husband and a devoted father and that I can attest for. Now its time for you to sleep, no more pain and suffering. The family that you leave behind here on earth will have the strength to pull thru and go on because God tells us to do so. Please give my dad and brother a hug for me and let them know that they are missed. Love Valerie

Pops your legacy will live on through the family you built and loved. I am blessed to have had 30 years of memories. All of heaven rejoices in your homegoing and while you will indeed be missed, we look forward to the day when we will be reunited in Glory.
"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words." 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
