Mr Putterman was my Drawing professor in my Freshman and Senior year of Art School. Philosophy and approaches to art, painting I still apply to this day. A real gentleman, with a great sense of humor, he is missed

Lovely man and a kind caring teacher. He left a huge impression on me when I was his student back in the mid 1970's at PCA. I have always remembered him - always will.

I was always glad to see Boris when he entered the classroom at OLLI. He was always cheerful, and I enjoyed listening to his poems and short stories about the army.
We (the class and I) became concerned when he missed several classes. I especially missed Boris.
I realize there are no words to comfort. But I will say a prayer for you. I will always remember Boris's smile. I always considered him a friend.

Boris, you and I never met, but I had the good fortune of experiencing firsthand the obvious wonderful impact you had on the members of your family. I read your obituary, and feel ALL the great benefits you offered to your family, especially to your son, Josh, whom I've known many years. The imprint of your teaching and example in Josh's life is so evident. Like you obviously were, Josh is a very good man, loving, caring, attentive to his duties to others, in every way. What a wonderful legacy you leave to him and others. I know they are sad now, but as time passes, they will recognize even more intensely the richnesses of their time in your life. Job very well done. You have my deep admiration. Dennis Jackson, former English & journalism professor, Univ. of Delaware.

Boris was the reason I was able to finish my studies at the University of the Arts. For class critiques, I would wait for his opinion. His was the only one that really mattered. He was the best art teacher I have ever known. His personality was so funny and honest. He will be missed, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Much love!

Boris was a wonderful drawing teacher while I was a freshman at Philadelphia College of Art. His love of drawing was enthusiastically passed on to his students in an inspiring manner. He was constructively critical, always encouraging, unusually funny and never intimidating.
Thank you Boris!!!

I found out at the end of my freshman year at PCA that I had a distant cousin I had not known of - Boris Putterman. I met him soon after, and always greeted him with a gleeful, "Howdy, Cousin Boris!" whenever I saw him at school. He was a sweet, warm and kind person, and he will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family, who are my cousins, also.

Yesterday, when I read the news about Boris' passing, a shadow fell over my heart and it felt heavier. A gentle giant has left us and our world is poorer for it. He will be missed but he won't be forgotten. Boris was a Mensch who touched all who knew him with his warmth, his passion, his bright spirit and is humor. Mon cher collègue, tu a laissé des traces en nous, ton amour et ta puissance, indélébles dans nos coeurs, tu as fait de la place pour toi pour toujours. My sympathy and my sincere condolences to his family and his friends.

Boris,
Thank you for teaching me to draw, to think through my art, to know through making space into meaning. I have and will always teach through what you have lead me to. Your teaching lives on through the next generation, and will, I have no doubt, continue on through their work and beyond.

I never met Borris but I have been friends with Alex for almost 10 years. He is a testament to the type of man Borris was. The stories he shared with his father over the years made me feel like I knew him a little. Condolences to the family.

I wanted to share what someone wrote when nominating Boris for a faculty award at UArts, because it speaks volumes about the kind, gentle person that was Boris:
Boris is a very principled artist and teacher. Students affirm his insistence on quality and his generosity in nourishing their maturation. They know him as a rigorous and detailed critic of form, as an advisor, questioner, inspirer, and advocate of lofty values. He thrives on academic dialogue, especially when it is centered on the nature of painting, the function of art, the needs of the student, and the content and methodology of teaching and learning.

On that balmy spring day last week, when in the late afternoon, word came of the ultimate crossing-over to Eternity of my long-standing, close friend, Boris, I turned to a view of the garden through my kitchen window. Though it was nearly the middle of April here, the garden hadnt yet floweredjust some tiny green tips on the twig ends of a few shrubs. At this hour of the day, the westward sun behind me was angling its rays eastward. In the front plane of my garden view, opened up ( seemingly suddenly) and standing face-front to the light was a symmetrical pair of pure-yellow daffodils, their six-petal Star-of-David blooms with orange centers, like two lucid eyes, gazing directly at me. This was surely Boris, presenting himself to me, more than symbolically, in his new and radiant state of glory.
