Arthur Poole Obituary

Arthur S. Poole, Jr., 84, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away February 4, 2021.

Born in Washington D.C. in 1936, Mr. Poole grew up in Roanoke, VA, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1958 with a B.S. in Engineering and an M.S. from George Washington University in 1973. He joined the US Navy in 1959, serving 29 years and retiring as a Captain in the Civil Engineer Corps. Upon retirement he worked for Sverdrup Corporation for 7 years in the Virginia Beach and Langley offices as a office/project manager and civil design engineer.

During his Navy career he served, among other places, in Antarctica, Spain, Vietnam and Puerto Rico. His assignments included duty as Commanding Officer, Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and Public Works Officer. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Joint Service Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Antarctic Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with 5 campaign stars. He greatly loved his wife and family, old friends from the Navy, good food and good wine, golf and life in general. He built some darn good antique reproductions, played lousy guitar, painted OK and was a great cook. He always had a home improvement project of some kind underway.

He is survived by his wife, Karin L. Poole of 57 years; daughter, Ellen Katherine Poole of Tempe, AZ; son, Thomas Poole and daughter-in-law, Lori Poole; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Zachary and Michael, all of Chantilly, Virginia.

Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Hollomon-Brown, Bayside Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at:

Karyn, Ellen and Thomas

Seeger was my first commanding officer. As a young ensign, he was a huge influence in my life at that time.

He was the finest officer with whom I served and a terrific engineer. I enjoyed working with him in Thomas’ Boy Scout pack.

I thought of him often and told many Seeger leadership stories over the years.

He and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

A fine naval officer and fellow CEC officer. Had the privilege of working with Seeger several times during my 26 year naval career. One of the best of the best. Bruce Geibel.

Seeger was 13 years my senior. We first met when I was a newly minted Lieutenant. He taught me many things about being successful in the Civil Engineer Corps. Great dedication to the Navy, inspiring leader, great sense of humor. I will long remember his kindness towards me.

Karin, God bless you and your family. They just didn't come any better than Seeger. I always considered him one of the very best CEC Officers we had and used his advice many times over the years. We will miss him greatly and will never forget all you did to support him in his CEC career. Warmest personal regards, Jack and Robin Buffington.

Karin, Ellen, Thomas, and Family-- Our hearts grieve with you. Seeger was much more than "darn good" at anything he wanted to do. Anyone, and there were many of us, who knew him knows that we all lost a great man, a true gentleman, and a good friend.....
