Lisa Coston PORTSMOUTH - Lisa Mary Relaford Coston, 46, died Jan. 27, 2010 at the Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was born in Petersburg, Va., to the late William and Edna Relaford. Lisa received a degree in psychology from Old Dominion University, and worked in the human services field in Norfolk and the surrounding area for years, before becoming a full-time musician. Lisa, a mezzo-soprano, was known for her warmth and beauty of tone, her versatility of musical style and her expressive singing voice throughout the Hampton Roads area and beyond. She sang with numerous choirs, including the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Czech Virtuosi, and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Lisa stayed busy as a solo performer and also taught voice at Christopher Newport University. Lisa also taught private voice lessons throughout the Hampton Roads area. Lisa is survived by her brother, Rosley Relaford; her sisters-in-law, Denita and Zandra (wife of the late Kevin Relaford); and her nieces, Alexa and Lauren Relaford; as well as her cousins, Thomas and Dr. Edna J. Griffin and children, and Elena Relaford and children. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Norfolk. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, or to the Ohef Sholom Temple in Norfolk in her honor. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made through www.hdoliver.com.

I was deeply sadden to find out about Ms Coston passing. Due to the fact that me and mother had just discussed three weeks ago that I was going to utilize her for my vocal training. Based off of her great experience in the Perfoming Arts. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. We first met Lisa almost 20 years ago when she rented one of our apartments and we became friends. We will always remember her soft speaking voice and her huge, booming laugh; a laugh that just made you want to laugh right along with her. She had a lovely singing voice, although we only had the pleasure of hearing her sing a couple of times. She will be missed.

I had the pleasure of hearing Lisa Coston sing several times and her voice was amazing. She could make a normally dull aria absolutely mesmerizing. Her voice and beautiful smile will be missed by the music community of Hampton Roads. My condolences to her family.

Lisa and I sang together during our years together at ODU. She was a marvelous musician, and possessed a voice that would stop traffic! She will be missed by her family, her friends and her colleagues. May God grant her family peace at this time.http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/pilotonline/obituary.aspx?n=lisa-coston&pid=139246273#

This is very saddening news. However, as the great spiritual reminds us "If Jesus Himself will be our leader, we shall walk through the valley (of the shadow of death) in peace."
