James Langford Byrd Jr.

James Langford Byrd, Jr., born on September 19, 1946, passed away on March 8, 2026, at the age of 79.

A graduate of Great Bridge High School, James furthered his education at Old Dominion University, where he pursued civil engineering and was an active member of the wrestling team. His dedication to both academics and athletics was a testament to his disciplined and determined nature.

James devoted forty-two years of his career to the National Geodetic Survey under NOAA, where he excelled as a cartographer and photogrammetrist. His expertise and leadership led to his role as Chief at the Atlantic Marine Center of the Coastal Compilation Section.

In addition to his career, James was a passionate hunting and fishing guide in Currituck County. He found joy in sharing his extensive knowledge about hunting and fishing with others, serving as a mentor to many. His legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James Langford Byrd and Alice Moseman.

He is survived by his three children, James L. Byrd III, Ernest R. Byrd, Anna Marie Byrd, and many grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of integrity and passion.
