Grant Gullickson Obituary

Grant G. Gullickson

Virginia Beach - Commander Grant "Gully" Gerhard Gullickson, U.S. Navy (Retired), 95, passed away July 20, 2016 at his home in Virginia Beach surrounded by his loved ones.

Gully was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife Celia; a daughter, Gigi Gullickson Kelly and her husband John of San Jose, CA; two sons, Gregg Grant Gullickson and his wife Denise of Clifton, VA, and Gary G. Gullickson and his wife Barbara of Virginia Beach, VA; and a stepson, Kenneth Alan Gibert of Winter Garden, FL. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Danielle, Brad and his wife Lisa, Grant, Megan and her husband Michael, and Sean, as well as three great grandchildren Elle Marie, Rivers Grant, and Emmeline Marie. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Beatrice, and an infant son, Galen.

Gully was born on the family homestead in Taylor, North Dakota on October 2, 1920 and had two brothers and six sisters. This loving family provided the strong foundation for Gully's never-ending positive attitude. Even at the end his mantra was "Everything is great."

Gully's life was a wonderful journey that allowed him to see much of the world and make many friends. In 1939, he joined the Navy in Great Lakes, beginning a 30-year naval career. During WWII Gully was a young sailor in USS Mississippi in both Pacific and Atlantic fleets. In 1942-1944, Gully was a chief machinist mate in USS Corry. On June 6, 1944 (D-day) Corry was sunk while providing naval gunfire support to the first waves of troops landing on Utah Beach. Twenty-four of Gully's shipmates were lost on D-day, and later in life Gully along with his Corry shipmates met every year for forty years to remember their lost shipmates.

Gully joined USS John Q. Roberts in the Pacific in 1944 and ended the war in Tokyo harbor. After the war he served in USS Burke out of Norfolk. In 1952 Gully was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer and then served as chief engineer in four ships out of Norfolk: USS Aldebaran, USS Rigel, USS Northampton (the president's command ship), and USS Forrestal (America's first super carrier). Gully also saw combat action off the coast of North Vietnam while leading a manpower validation team assigned to USS Barney.

After Gully's distinguished naval career, he joined a great team at Military Circle Mall in 1970 as the chief engineer and later became general manager until he retired in 1985.

Following his mother's example, Gully dedicated himself to helping others. He was a member of many service groups and was twice president of the Lake Shores Civic League. Gully was an accomplished mechanic having learned to work on Model T's as a young boy. He had a passion for cars throughout his life and it was common to find Gully up to his elbows in grease and asking for some wrench to be handed to him. Gully loved to travel, and he and his family made many memorable trips from Virginia to North Dakota and Europe. His house was always open for visitors wherever he lived and his generosity and gusto for life were constants in his household.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. The naval burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery in the upcoming months. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Suite 123, Washington, DC 20004 - In memory of Grant Gullickson.

I am sorry to hear about Mr. Gullickson. I was employed at Military Circle Mall in the maintenance Dept. as an HVAC mechanic. A couple years ago I was watching the D DAY special with Tom Brokaw and was surprised to see Gully's interview in regards to the invasion. Being a retired Navy Senior Chief I am surely blessed to have crossed paths with him. Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate.

Gully was a Great man and Shipmate, he will be missed by all

July 24, 2016

"Gully" - as we knew him, was one of a great generation. Everything I can say about him starts with the letter "G" - like his name. He was a great American. He was grateful for his life, his friends, his loved ones. He was always gracious to me and my husband, Rick. He will be greatly missed.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who were lucky enough to be touched by this great man.

It was in 1975 that I first met Gully Gullickson and his family during one of the picnics in my future Mother-in-laws backyard. There were many more of these picnics with neighbors as I dated, and then married my wife Martha who had been Gully's neighbor as a child since 1954. In 1982 my wife & I were able to buy a home in Lake Shores and within a few months Gully & Bob Vessaliza, a neighbor of mine & longtime friend of Gully, knocked on my door and asked if I would be interested in being the President of the civic league. Being a young 1st Class Petty Officer in the Navy Gully was quick to point out to me how this civic duty would enhance my Navy career in being able to make Chief. I took the bait and said yes. In 1999 my wife and bought the home she grew up in and once again became next door neighbors to Gully. Gully was always the consummate definition of the word "neighbor". He always was willing to lend a hand when help was needed and would loan me any tool, along with the mechanical advice on how to fix a problem. I treasure the many days we would sit together in his driveway and enjoy a cold Yuengling swapping sea stories. Gully was a true friend, mentor, and neighbor to me and many others in Lake Shores. I know he is now enjoying being with Bob once again and swapping more stories. All of us will miss him until we meet again.

Grant has been an inspiration in my life and many others who knew him. We will always treasure the times he spent with us on the home place in North Dakota. His face would light up when he talked about growing up near Taylor. We will miss you greatly. We love you.

Grant "Gully" Gullickson was my Mom's cousin. When I was around 6 years old, he took us on a tour of the ship on which he was serving, the USS Forrestal. I have a picture of that day, sitting in the captains chair of a major aircraft carrier. Unfortunately, this was the only time I got to meet him, but because of that picture, I remember him, as well as that moment very well.
Gully also served aboard the USS Corry, which sunk while providing support for the troops landing on Utah Beach on D-Day. Gully barely made it out of there alive, but went on to serve aboard many other ships in various theaters.
Rest in peace Gully, I wish I had known you better. But I have that priceless picture by which to remember you!

Barbara and family, The news of Gully's passing is heartbreaking. He is surely the "last of his kind," and the world is a better place for his having spent 95 years touching the lives of so many in a wonderfully positive way. I'll always credit him with being my first mentor in the retail marketing industry. My marketing career began when he invited me to join his team in the late 70's. He leaves a legacy of kindness, caring, thoughtfulness and a love of humanity. He never hesitated to help another when the opportunity presented. A true hero in what he gave to his country and even more so what he gave to the business world. His standards will never be paralleled. I love you Gully you'll be missed by so many. My sincere condolences to his family and friends... heaven is the better for his arrival.

The world and Lake Shores lost a wonderful, neighbor, friend, husband and Father with Gully's passing. I had the privilege of knowing him for many years. He was a wonderful helper for my Mother and he and my Bill enjoyed many days of sharing junk and treasures. We will miss him greatly but know he is resting in a better place and watching to be sure we are taking care of one another. Love, William and Sharon Lawrence
