MACOMB - Chalmers Cross, 99, of Macomb passed away at 9:35 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb.
Chalmers was born on March 5, 1914, in Walnut Grove, Ill., to Frank and Cordia Hageman Cross. He married Mary Madaline Sanders from Blandinsville on Nov. 4, 1939. She passed away in January of 2011.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters, Zola Cummings, Mabel Worthington, Dorothy Tournear, Dale, Charles, Fern Johnston and Goldie Cross.
Chalmers is survived by two sons, Ronald C. Cross and Phillip R. Cross, both of Macomb; five granddaughters, Celene Cross, Kelly Cross, Kenzie (Cross) Kelly, Cassie Cross and Teschlyn (Cross) Woods and four great-grandchildren.
Chalmers was a member of the First Christian Church of Macomb, the Roseville Masonic Lodge No. 519, Quincy Consistory, Mohammed Shrine and the Macomb Elks Lodge No. 1009.
Chalmers had a trucking business when he was young, hauling coal and limestone. In 1946, he established Cross Motor Sales selling Hudsons, Ramblers, American Motors and Jeeps. He earned numerous awards for sales. Chalmers enjoyed racing his H-145 stock car, playing cards, driving his tractor on the farm, entertaining his grandchildren and mowing lawns.
Masonic services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery with graveside services to follow. The Reverend Earl Beal will officiate. There will be no visitation.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Macomb YMCA and the Macomb Library Capital Project.
