PEORIA - James A. Maloof, 93, of Peoria passed away at 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at his residence.
Jim was born Oct. 18, 1919, in Peoria to Nimer and Sarah (Zyne) Maloof. He married Gertrude ""Trudy"" Burson on June 28, 1941, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on March 29, 2001.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; older brothers, Abraham, Mitchell and Fredrick Maloof; and son, Mark.
He is survived by his sons, J. Michael (Margaret) Maloof and Nicholas (Olga) Maloof; daughter, Janice Maloof; grandchildren, Peter Thomas Maloof, Sarah Maloof, Lisa Maloof Hall, Christian Maloof, Katie Maloof, Ethan Maloof, Lydia Maloof, Nick J. Maloof, Micheline Maloof and Markie-Marie Maloof; great-grandchildren, Coralie Hall, Iona Hall, Aidan Maloof, Erin Maloof and Meghan Maloof; and bonus grandchildren, Stephanie Maloof Britton and Cassie Maloof Salazar.
Jim served in the Air Force during World War II as Acting Master Sergeant. When he was discharged, he returned to the family dry cleaning business where he served as president of Maloof Cleaners from 1946 to 1968. In 1969, he started Jim Maloof/ Realtor, which quickly became one of the foremost residential real estate firms in the Peoria area.
An avid athlete, he played in the Sunday Morning Baseball League for years. He enjoyed all sports, particularly baseball, golf and fishing. Jim served various volunteer activities throughout his life, but he became best known for his singing. He sang at hundreds of weddings and funerals. He sang with the Peoria Orpheus Club for 22 years and led the Annual Journal Star Christmas Sing at the Peoria Courthouse for four decades.
Jim's crowning achievement was his participation in St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In 1958, Jim was appointed to the first ALSAC/St. Jude Board of Directors. He continued to serve until now. In 1960, Jim initiated the first St. Jude Teen March which was quickly embraced by communities all across America. He created a new precedent in fundraising when he asked: "When you see the teen with the giant button at your door, give a dollar!"
To bring continuity to the overall fundraising efforts in Central Illinois for St. Jude, in 1978, Jim enlisted the support of WEEK TV and Bergners Department Stores, to co-sponsor and pay for the first St. Jude Telethon in Peoria. Jim was instrumental in creating other major fundraisers for St. Jude including the annual Memphis to Peoria Run. Under the watchful guise of its co-creator Mike McCoy, the St. Jude Runs have become one of the most prolific fundraising events in the nation.
Jim Maloof's vision, relentless dedication, tireless drive and incomparable leadership contributed immeasurably to the success of ALSAC/St. Jude and made the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate the success it is today. Jim has served as Chairman of the Board of the Midwest Affiliate since its inception. He held and/or attended thousands of St. Jude benefits locally and nationally, representing St. Jude and raising monies in over 35 States throughout America.
Against this backdrop, Jim Maloof on Thanksgiving Day in 1984, decided to run for Mayor. Jim's campaign theme, which became the platform of his administration, was called "Forward Peoria!" Forward Peoria included committees of citizens working on various community issues and challenges. This concept not only served as a good campaign theme, but it resulted in timeless improvements in the quality of life in Peoria. Peoria was named an All American City by 1989 and again in 1993. Jim was re-elected twice, in 1989 and again in 1993, serving three terms and 12 years total.
After retiring as Mayor, Governor Jim Edgar appointed Jim to the State of Illinois Human Rights Commission. Governor George Ryan appointed him to a second term.
Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. The Most Reverend Bishop Daniel Jenky and Msgr. Stanley Deptula will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Riverside Community Church, 207 NE Monroe, Peoria. A celebration of life will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. also at Riverside Community Church. An additional visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday preceding the Mass at the cathedral.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, 4722 N. Sheridan Road, Peoria, IL 61602; and/ or Peoria Dream Center, 714 Hamilton Blvd., Peoria, IL 61603, in memory of Jim Maloof.

Jim gave my father, Don Mariani, and me, a start in the real estate business in 1977. His example of daily professional kindnesses (dropping a card with a news article cutout in mail from PJS) has me copying him 50 years later.

I am very sorry for your loss. As my brother, Fr. Don Shadid, mentioned in another journal entry, I also remember Jim being mentioned by several of us Shadids, and always with a positive and happy thought. I remember him singing at my brother's wedding reception. I also had the pleasure of being an architect on the new municipal complex in Peoria, Arizona, beginning in 1986. Jim had just been down to visit for their centennial celebration, and once they learned I was from Peoria, IL they of course told me what a great man he was. The fact that I and my family knew him made it even more special.
I hope the good memories you have of Jim make this time easier for you.

I used to waitress at the Grill downtown. Nearly every week Jim would come in and I would chat with him. I learned that he came in just to take home a loaf of bread for his wife. I am still touched by his dedication as a husband.

My Dad, Jerry McConnell, joined South-West Kiwanis in 1963. Dad said Jim and Don Miller, who passed away 12 days before Jim, were his mentors. After Dad passed away, I was always glad to see them and their concern on how we were doing. How unbelievable they left us so close to join their beloved Trudy and Shirley. I will always remember when I told Jim I was going to be President of Collinsville Sunrise Kiwanis and he whispered, "Jer would be so proud." That meant so much. I still remember when he sang "The Impossible Dream" when Dad was President for the annual Kid's Day and when he sang" Climb Every Mountain" as a tribute to Dad as he retired as Key Club Administrator. I feel so blessed have Uncle Jimmy in my life. God's blessings to Jan, Mike, Nick and your families.

I, and The Villages Golf Academy, will miss the booming voice of the precious old man with the funny cane and little dog being directed around by Jan. I will miss watching Mr. Jim hold court on the driving range at Palmer Legends, giving swing tips to any one who would listen.
I regret not having a chance to say good bye but I truly hope he knew how much I respected him. A signed copy of one of his books has a special page with words from Mr. Jim I will forever cherish my time with him.

To the Maloof family, I had the pleasure of working with your father on several St Jude events during the time I was the Bergner's Sheridan Village Store manager. His passion and love of people was something one rarely experiences in action. He made everyone he came in contact with feel special, deserving and proud. Whenever he asked for something, your heart said yes and you found a way. A true inspiration to many, including this humbled store manager who has never forgotten his handshake, his hug or his smile. I no longer live in Peoria but will always remember Jim as the most tireless and dedicated individual in all his endeavors especially St. Jude. He defined for me "giving back".

What can I say? Jim was a 'one of a kind' gentleman who won my respect 8 years ago when I joined the Jim Maloof Realty Team. From the first time he called and sang "Happy Birthday" he was special to me. He would call my clients and thank them for listing with JMR and "Granny". He called me "Granny" after he found out I had 26 grandchildren. I'll miss his calls and notes with a "smilely" face. He was great example of putting charity and love to work for others. Will miss you, Jim!

Jan & family: I was so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Losing your father leaves a void in your life & in your heart that cannot be replaced by anyone. I still feel that void 12 years later but when you get sad think of the wonderful memories. One of my fond memories of your Dad was that he sang my wedding. He did a wonderful job. He had also done many others with my Mother, so they shared that special bond as well. Just know that many are thinking of you during this difficult time & sympathizing with your loss. My prayers are with you. Barb

Heaven's Gain is Earth's Loss! Peoria will never be the same without Jim Maloof! He not only Taked the Talk but he Walked the Walk. Fifty years ago he sang at our wedding. Ann remembers being at the BU fieldhouse when Jim brought Danny Thomas to Peoria to introduce an unknown cause, St. Jude Children's Hospital. It has been a privilege to work for him and have him as a neighbor in The Villages, FL. Wow, he was giving free golf lessons at the Arnold Palmer Golf Course in his 90's. Your neighbors in FL miss you!

As I sit here reading all of the truly wonderful stories about Jim Maloof and what an incredible man he was, I am truly touched, but there seems to be something missing, something left out of all of those accolades, something just as important as every accomplishment Jim ever achieved…the fact that he raised his first born son Michael, to be exactly like him.
I only had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Maloof 3 times before his passing, but I don't feel short changed, I feel very fortunate that I work beside his son Michael, absorbing in all that he teaches me on a daily basis.
I came here after being with a law firm for 19 years, unsure of how I would adapt. My first week here Michael was taking some time off from the office but made a point to come in every day to have coffee with me because he didn't want me to feel overwhelmed. How many people can say that? How many presidents and CEO's of companies care about the emotional wellbeing of their staff enough to make them feel special….not many I'm sure.
To know Jim is not to know Michael, Michael is not larger than life, not loud, not gregarious, nor does he sing. What is he? Michael is quiet, and kind and generous, he is a teacher, a mentor and every other single thing his father taught him to be, he is everything the Maloof name stands for.
I remember the first few weeks I was here he was teaching and quizzing me about the real estate business, we drifted off onto other subjects, subjects that I clearly wasn't educated on and he said to me “geeze, didn't those lawyers teach you anything in 19 years?” Every day is a new day of learning for me with one of the best teachers I could ask for.
Michael is the President of Jim Maloof Realtor, he has seen this company through low sales during the recession only to be recognized this year as one of only 17 of the top 500 Real Estate Companies in the United States to grow in 3 critical areas of business by Real Trends Magazine. He is a member of numerous boards and charities including but not limited to The Peoria Chamber of Commerce and St. Jude.
He carries on the traditions his father taught him....“catching people doing good things”, writing notes of encouragement to his agents on their commission stubs, acknowledging a complete stranger in the newspaper with a handwritten note, to most recently taking Starbucks coffee down to all the mechanics at a local car dealership “just because”.
You did good Jim, Michael is truly his father's son.
Don't worry Peoria, the Maloof Legacy Lives On in Michael.

James Michael and Maloof family, We are so sorry for your loss. It is difficult to finally lose both of your parents.
I remember the times we had on the West Bluff and St. Mark's. I also remember the times I worked at the cleaners, lunches at your grandmother's house, and our days at Spalding.
Jim would always say "hi" to me (using his petname.) He will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

There are no words to describe what Jim Maloof meant to me. Having been involved for the last 20+ years with St. Jude in a variety of areas, it has been my honor and privilege to work with one of the finest, most-giving, and incredible human beings to ever walk on this planet. I am sure, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jim was welcomed into Heaven by God with open arms, where he is , no doubt, reunited with Trudy and the rest of his family, and all the St. Jude kids who have gone before him. I'm also sure that he is singing, with pride, "I did it my way"!! Rest in peace, Jim. I, like thousands of others, love you and will miss you terribly. You left an incredible mark on this world during your lifetime. Rest in Peace, my friend, until we meet again.

To the Maloof Family:
I am sorry to hear about our Loss, but I know Heaven has gained a Soul that now knows a Joyful Happiness that could never be fully known on this Earth! He now sings with the Angelic Choirs for Eternity ... we cannot even imagine the Joy! My Wedding Celebration was one of the Thousands that Jim's Voice elevated unto the Heavens! I remember being very little and hearing the Name of Jim Maloof and his Family in the Shadid Gatherings ... and it was always a Good & Blessed "mention" ... we loved him because he loved us first ... Thanks be to God for allowing us to share in his life on this Earth! May Jim's Memory Be Ever Eternal in our Lord's Heavenly Kingdom, where all of His Blessed Saints do Repose! Jim and all of you will be in our Prayers ... from the Holy Altar of our St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Johnstown, PA ... and ... from within the Closet of our Hearts!

My husband and I are so saddened by the loss of a wonderful man. I got to know Jim the best after my son Nick was diagnosed with AML at age 15. Jim was one of the first to call Nick at St. Jude in Memphis. They talked about golf and Jim told him someday they were going to play. He called us often at St. Jude to see how Nick was doing. Nick passed away at St. Jude in Memphis at age 17. Jim came to his visitation. It mean't so much to us that he was there. I even went to work at his office for a short time. He never forgot Nicks love for golf. I would go into his office and talk about Nick and he would talk about how he and his friend, Danny Thomas established St. Jude. After Nick passed his classmates at Richwoods formed a fundraiser for St. Jude called "Walk for Nick". Jim and Mike McCoy came to the first walk. They made wonderful speaches about Nick and said they were so proud of these students and parents who organized this to raise money for St. Jude in memory of Nick. Jim also came to the next two walks as well. I will never forget that. My heart and prayers go to his family. To Jan, his beautiful daughter, who was always by his side and always cried everytime she hugged me, I love you dearly. He is now with his beloved wife, his son and all of his St. Jude kids in heaven. I hope he and Nick get to play that round of golf. Jim, we will miss you terribly, we love you and will never ever forget what you have done for our kids of St. Jude.

To Jim's Family,
We are very sad to hear of Jim's passing. I was a supporter of St. Jude Memphis in the 1960's. When the Midwest Affiliate was formed, I worked as a Lady of St. Jude in the 1970's and 80's. with the first doctors, Dr. Robert Hart and Dr. John Taraska. Trudy was a joy to be with. Jim was such a warm person and always called me Diana when we would meet over the years. We hope the many, many happy memories will help you get through this most difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

He encouraged me to volunteer as an Ambassador for the city of Peoria and from that point forward there wasn't anything he asked that I could say no too. When I would travel home to Boston, he was known as th "singing Mayor" both in NY and my home town of Mass. I will miss his wit, charm and friendship. There will never bee another Jim Maloof. Rev. John H. Lee Sr.
January 22, 2013
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My deepest sympathy to the Maloof Family.
I had the pleasure of knowing Jim while he was at Methodist hospital, and I had the privilege of transporting him for testing, he always had a smile and story to tell.
Jim's spirit will live in our hearts forever. I miss you Jim!
