R. Lynn Obituary

R. Scott Lynn
MORTON - R. Scott Lynn, 63, of Morton passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born on May 17, 1957, in Peoria, Ill., to Robert and Patsy (Henninger) Lynn. He married Mary Strickland on August 16, 1980, in Morton.
Scott is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn of Morton; two sons, Patrick Lynn of Urbana, Ill., and Jeffrey (Miranda) Lynn of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Vicki (Gary) Horn of Morton; one brother, Craig Lynn of Mission, Kan.; and his step-mother, Vernetta Lynn of Lafayette, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kevin Lynn in 1983; and one nephew, Jesse Horn in 2019.
Scott was a 1975 graduate of Morton High School, where he wrestled. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's of science degree in teaching biology. From 1980 to 1985, he taught biology and coached football at Girard High School in Girard, Ill. In 1987, Scott then continued his teaching career at Morton High School in Morton, Ill., where he taught biology and coached wrestling, football and girls' golf. Scott obtained his National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2002. He received his master's degree from Saint Xavier University in 2003. After 35 years of teaching, Scott retired from Morton High School in 2017.
As a family, when we think of Scott's interests, his children were the top and most important to him. Some of his intellectual interests included his extensive collection of fossils and his study of the Civil War. Scott loved to travel, so some of our best memories include fishing and golfing trips and especially all the mini golf challenges. We can't think of Scott without remembering his love of food – meat, crustaceans of all kinds and Mountain Dew. And, of course, his office is a montage of every John Wayne film ever made.
A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to MHS Science Department Endowment Fund in care of the Morton Community Foundation at https://bit.ly/Scott_Lynn_Memorial

I would just like to pass along my condolences to Mary, Pat, Jeff, His sister Vicki, and the rest of his family and close friends. I grew up next to Scott and Mary and had a lot of fond memories then Pat and Jeff came along. We had a lot of fun times together playing G.I. Joes or Ghostbusters or playing baseball together in each others yards with Scott or my Dad pitching to us and Mary playing as well. I can honestly say that they were the best next door neighbors I had. I remember Mary help teaching me how to ride my bike while she was babysitting me and Scott and I watching Clint Eastwood or a John Wayne movie. Clint Eastwood was and is my favorite actor, so its fair to say we had a lot to talk about and in common. When I was 10 our family moved from Main St. over by the Morton Pool, but I would always try and stay in touch with them but as the years passed it got harder and harder. But I was a Wrestler and when I got to High School Mr. Lynn was coaching Fresh-Soph. Even though I was on the Varsity Team we still spent a lot of time together talking about wrestling and of course quizzing each other about Clin Eastwood and John Wayne movies. We had a lot of fun together just talk and always learning from Scott. The last time I saw Scott and Mary and Pat and Jeff was a little over a year ago at another not so happy time at Jesses funeral but it was good to them and Vicki and Gary and many of my Past teachers I got to talk to and see. I wish I could be there to give my condolences and share some good memories about Scott and see his family and friends but during these crazy times its hard to do that. Sorry for talking too long. Just wanted give you my best and to let you know that I am thinking of you all and God Bless!!!

I was in Mr. Lynn's honors biology class and advanced biology class in high school, and I have so many fond memories of those classes. Those classes were quite honestly a big reason I got through college and have always stood at the core of my education. I vividly remember dissecting a fetal pig to learn internal anatomy, conducting an experiment about paramecia that I created all on my own, and going on field trips to gather various leaves. During one of the field trips, the class had to cross an almost-flooded rushing stream, so Mr. Lynn grabbed some of the smaller students (myself included), threw us over his shoulder, and carried us across the stream himself. He was such a hero! I've always wanted to reach out to him and let him know how incredibly grateful I am for his classes, even to this day, and how much they affected my life and memories. He was genuinely one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I am thankful that he was a part of my life. I share my greatest condolences to his family, friends, past students, and anyone else who loved him and knew what an amazing human being he was. Rest in Peace, Mr. Lynn.
