Roger Coast Obituary

Roger Coast 86, of North Olmsted, Ohio, passed away Monday January 14. Roger was born in Akron, Ohio.

Roger was an amazing artist who's talents lead him around the United States and around

the world. He studied Graphic Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

His career included Promotion Art Director for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Director

of Visual Design for American Greetings Corporation and Professor and Chairman of the

Industrial Design Department of the Cleveland Institute of Art. In expression of his love of architecture, he created a new form of art in his retirement years, framed acid etched engravings of his drawings of city skylines .

Soon these popular engravings became diversified and included travel scenes, professions, and

United States colleges. He displayed his work in galleries and in many art shows.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sara, with whom he shared 65 wonderful years. His son, Steven lives in Colorado Springs with his wife Ginnie. Roger was preceded in death by his son, David, leaving a wife Annette (Anatra)

and daughter Nicole(Johnson). He is grandfather of Acacia Coast, Katie Coast, Will Coast, Chris Coast, Trevor Coast, and Nicole Johnson. He is greatgrandfather of Inara and Sariah Johnson. Family, friends, art and travel dominated his life. He was a volunteer at Metro General Hospital for 35 years drawing children and making them smile.

Roger's work and personality made me laugh. I discovered him through my parents, my father worked at the Plain Dealer, and my mother was an artist, when I was very young in the late early 1960s and 70s. I have many sketches and his unique engravings in my possession and enjoy them. Than you, Mr. Coast

I have just learned of Mr. Coast's passing. My mother bought several of his pieces in the 70s (perhaps from shows at Stan Hywet), and I still cherish them. Blessings.

I just discovered. Oh, my... I have been a fan of his art since my aunt & I bought prints from WVIZ. A few years ago, I found them and proceeded to discover (& purchase) more prints & such. Everything he created speaks to me. Time to put my collection on the wall!

Mr. Coast was one of my teacher's at the Cleveland Institute of Art back in the late 1990's. I have nothing but fond memories of him as he was a very kind and warm individual with a great sense of humor. Mr. Coast once shared a very funny story with me about coming face to face with his twin. He was vacationing in Fiji and had just eaten a large quantity of banana's. Despite being bloated from eating all of these bananas he decided to go snorkeling. While snorkeling, he dived down and started to swim through a tunnel in the rocks. As he started to enter the tunnel he was startled when he came face to face with his twin...this twin wasn't human...this twin was a seal that apparently looked exactly like him! The seal had lots of white whiskers and a white chin matching his beard and mustache! I will remember this story and the wonderful way Mr. Coast would laugh as he told it for the rest of my life. Mr. Coast was a special man and will be greatly missed.
