ALBERT CARETTO Obituary
Age 91, of Valencia, formerly of Gibsonia and Shaler, on June 28, 2019. Beloved husband of Anne (McGrath) Kilbourn Caretto and the late Virginia (Ahman) Caretto; loving mother of Joseph Caretto and Ann Caretto; brother of the late Gloria Gosline. Friends received Monday, July 8, 2019, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 5864 Heckert Rd., Bakerstown. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 10 a.m. in St. Richard Church. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Rochester, Al was a longtime Professor of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. A lifelong sailor, he competed in races on Deep Creek Lake with his boat, the Flying Scot. www.schellhaasfh.com.

Our sympathy to Anne and Joe. Al was always a pleasure to talk with. And I enjoyed talking with Jenny because she was a fellow nurse. We will miss him at Deep Creek Lake.

You were a fantastic professor and educator. I met you in 1987 at PGSS which you supported with such heart over the years. As a girl from a small town, PGSS opened my eyes up to what was possible.
You will be sorely missed by many family, friends, colleagues, students, and those of us who you had such an impact on but may not even know it. Thank you, Al!

I knew Dr. Caretto as a student in the first class of PGSS in the summer of 1982, and later as a counselor. He always had time to talk to the students, and he came across as confident of his chemistry and his leadership, and he was genuinely interested in the students. I haven't had the pleasure of talking to him in some time, but thinking of him now brings back a sense of happiness.

"Big Al" had a huge influence on my life through his direction of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences. I'm proud that alumni managed to revive the school in 2013 after the state ended the program in 2009. I'm also pleased that I got to see Professor Caretto again at the scientific symposium at the end of PGSS 2013. I'm very grateful for the ways he contributed to the course of my life as a scientist.

I too had the pleasure of getting to know Prof. Caretto as a member of the first class of the Pennsylvania School for the Sciences at CMU back in the summer of 1982. What a kind and intelligent man. He really leaves such an incredible legacy!

Prof. Caretto was the first director of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS). As a (rambunctious) member of that first class, I now appreciate the patience and quiet strength that he brought to the position. He also had a whimsical touch in his lecturing. He was the first professor that I met close up, and I'm thankful for how he and the PGSS faculty/staff set high standards in how we should comport ourselves as researchers. No doubt he had a positive impact on young Pennsylvanians in the sciences over the years. Thank you, Prof. Caretto.

Professor Caretto was a great professor of chemistry and a darn good department chair. My interactions with him are a great part of the fond memories I had of my time as a chemistry major at CMU. I was a class representative for my year which meant I got to have a monthly lunch with Professor Caretto. Professor Caretto, Professor Karol, Gary Truxton and I often played handball. These memories played no small part in my career path which found me being a chemistry professor (and even a department chair.) RIP professor and condolences to your family.
