I first met Bill in 1978 when he was living in Maryland. We trained in Shotokan Karate together and I got to know him as an intelligent, patient and extremely kind person. He was ambitious and worked hard to accomplish his goals and his memory will not be forgotten. RIP Bill!

Dear Noreen and family: You have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I knew Bill at St Thomas High School where he graduated one class before me in 1968. He was a great friend and frequent Chess partner in those days, and, looking through the Guest Book, I was happy to see how he touched so many lives.

Dear Noreen, Alicia and Maura: we're so sorry to hear about Bill. It's come as a shock. I first met Bill when he gave a seminar in the Institute of Virology in Glasgow and subsequently at a VZV meeting in Maryland. He was good enough to offer me a post-doc position in BFLO and the Ruyechan-Williams family put me up during my first week in the New World. Bill was a big help to me in settling down in BFLO and he and Noreen made us both very welcome. He was a great person in and out of the lab. He'll obviously be missed by you, his closest family, but also by everyone else he's helped along the way, ourselves included.

Dear Noreen and family, I am so sorry to hear about Bill. He was a wonderful professor and although I did not know him well, I distinctly remember his smile and positive attitude. He was always supportive of students, patient, and encouraging and I know he will be missed, but I am sure he leaves you all with many wonderful memories. Sincerely, Jamie Heimburg-Molinaro

Fr. Matt and all of Bill's family,
My sincerest and prayerful sympathy to all of you. I graduated with Bill from St. Thomas High School, Braddock in 1968 and we all knew Bill would be successful as a scientist, academician, scholar or chess player, or all of the above. He was the very best chess player in the school. May he rest in eternal peace.

My heartfelt condolances go out to the Ruyechan family. It is an honor for me to be a student of Sensei Bill. Every week I couldn't wait for the workday to end so I could go to the dojo and train with Sensei and be instructed by him. I think about him always. When I enter the dojo his high spirits remain with me. I am a better person for knowing Sensei Bill. He will be missed very much.

Bill was a collaborator of ours in the VZV field. He was a great person to work with and also a great person to talk to about any subject. As they say, a real "mensch". He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his wife, children and entire family

My condolence to the entire family and the UB community that he was an integral part of. Some of my fondest memories of UB were of Bill and his helpful advice. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to Noreen, Maura, Alicia and the entire family. You've make all of us feel like family. I love our get togethers and spending time with our extended family and will miss Bill very much. He was a great scientist and adviser, but mainly a wonderful and kind human being and a fantastic cook. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was a grant administrator in Sponsored Projects Services at UB, and at the time, I had a 1 year old daughter that came down with a fever at the same time that Dr. Ruyechan's grant was due to get submitted to NIH. I sent him an email and explained the situation and told him I was sorry, I know we had been working together, but someone else would have to finish the process for me. He emailed me back the kindest email putting a new mother's worried heart to ease - explaining as a virologist it is natural for a baby to get fevers. He said she would be fine, it just had to run it's course, but as a parent, he understood, and he knew my daughter needed me more than he did, and I should be home with her to comfort her. I never forgot that, and I adored him for that. I never met Bill in person, but we had many, many long talks over the phone, and I truly enjoyed all of them. My life is richer for having known him. Thank you, to his family, for sharing him with all of us. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Deepest sympathies to the family. I had known Bill since 1998 when I moved to Buffalo. He and Noreen have been instrumental in my carreer as a post-doc and was very helpful when it was time for me to find a faculty position. More than that he had become a friend. I was always looking for Bill everytime I'd stopped at UB. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Ruyechan was a kind man who always had a nice cheerful way of talking, which would put anyone at ease instantly. Even for the short amount of time I knew him, he left a lasting impression on me . He will be dearly missed.

I have known Bill for 18 years and trained with him at the Buffalo Shotokan Karatte Club. He was a great teacher with a true warrior spirit. We shared martial arts stories, books, and ideas on a regular basis. He helped develop my karate and my character. He took my two young daughters in to his dojo and helped build the foundation of their physical and mental development which will stay with them their entire lives. I am proud to call Bill Ruyechan our Sensei. We will miss you Sensei. Jerry, Cheyenne and Erica Krull
