Upon searching for former coworkers at Ohio Barge Line, I am saddened to find that Paul has passed away. We made several month-long round trips traveling south to the port of New Orleans in the 1970s. Paul had a pleasant personality and he was a good man to work with. I also remember his musical talent as he played his guitar in the evening hours on the return trips to Pittsburgh. May you rest in peace!

Wow, here is what surfing the Internet gets you. I knew Paul in the early to mid-eighties. He lived in Pittsburgh and I lived on the Upper West Side. He came to NYC to record and I came to Pittsburgh on work trips. Eventually we fell out of each other’s orbits.

I am so sorry to learn that he left us so soon. He was smart, funny, passionate, and creative; the world needs more of that.

oh uncle paul - sometimes i sit here wondering what our relationship would be like if you were still here. as the years go on, i lose memories i have of you since i was so young when you passed, and it's frustrating. you had such a love for music and so do i, that's something we share, and i love it. i wish you were here to teach me how to play guitar and tell me about all the places you had traveled. i hope you're proud of the many things i've accomplished. i wish you could've seen me graduate. i hope you and uncle bob watch down on the family every day and keep us safe. i love you, sweet angel.

I am not sure what made me think of Paul today, but i decided to check online to see if he was around. I was shocked to read of his passing. I knew Paul back in the early 70's. I lived in Millvale and Paul introduced me to a world of music beyond top 40 that i never knew existed. He showed me music and bands i never knew existed, and as such changed the course of my musical life. My family moved to Florida in 1973, and i lost touch with Paul. I moved back to the area, but never reestablished contact with him. It makes me feel good that he turned his great love of the guitar into a lifes passion.

Never met such a down to earth well grounded person.

Paul fronted me some noise toys that survived a fire. He knew I was good for the money simply because I went to school at St. Anthony's a few years behind him.

I am sure the twinkle in Paul's eyes and his huge smile are a million times brighter now than ever.

God bless Paul and Family.

I still think about Paul quite a bit. I have a picture of him on my China cabinet and often think about the man that was taken too young. I miss him greatly and was the man that made me want to play guitar.

Knew Paul from back in the early 80's and stayed a friend with him through a lot of years. When he was moving to LA, I was leaving for NYC and tried in vain to get him to come with me. I visited him in LA a few times, either when I was on tour or just to hang, and he came to stay w/me in NYC quite a few times. We spoke many times about working together, but alas, other than some jams/songwriting, it never came to fruition. As time went on he developed into a truly great guitarist. He is and will be missed.

Time passes, wounds heal. But we still long for your quick smile, the twinkle in your eye, your bursting joy and curiosity, your generosity and childlike wonderment. Our lives are lessened. We miss you, Paul.

Paul was a rare friend. Met him in the early 80's at a Norman show at the Decade, where he invited me to his home and the studio, and well, it's a frienship I'll never forget..Joe Ariondo

I was searching the internet to see if Paul was doing anything musically in the current time. I was dismayed to learn of his passing. I got to know him at an early Norm Nardini show through my distant relative Mark Lewandowski from the SPUDS. I ran into him regularly when he was back from California. I remember his spectacular generosity, his friendliness and his style. To a guy who worked at Mellon Bank, he was refreshingly the opposite of so many of my co workers. I honor his memory and wish you all belated condolences.

Paul was not only a great player, able to play the main lick of any song title I called out, he was also full of passion for the music. I only met him 2 or 3 years before he past but wow. I got to sit and hear the best rock stories and learn so much. We jammed a few times and I actually got him on stage on his 50th birthday at a gig at the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern. I consider myself a blessed and lucky guy for getting to spend time with him. From one lefty rocker to another, I say "rock on Paul". Missed but not forgotten.

Id like to offer my sincere condolences to the Suchma family and also to say hi to the many people in pittsburgh whom I havnt seen in years. Feel free to contact me.

Twenty-five plus years ago, I met Paul. Wonderful man. Excellent musician! I, and, my mom adored him! The Quiet One!

Working with the band, back when, losing him, and before him, Nas.

It tells us, we are getting older. It tells me, to hold on to the memories and, to enjoy life. At 50, you have to let life roll off your sleeve and just continue on...

Paul, you will be missed.

To the Suchma family & Paul's friends: my deepest sympathy to everyone. I only found out about Paul's passing the weekend of the Memorial Tribute at Moondog's and unfortunaltey I was not able to attend that.
I just wanted to extend my sympathy and I am so sorry for the loss we all share. I knew Paul from the 80's and his sweetness and genuine concern for people really shined through as strong as his music and love for his guitar! He is missed and Lord knows he is rockin' Heaven and keeping a close hand on all of us!
God Bless you Paul! Thank you for being YOU!

I’d like to thank everybody who came out to the Paul Shook memorial show at Moondogs. What a rush! It was so cool seeing all those ole friend’s faces again. I’d also like to thank all the musicians who played, Steve Acri and Larry Germack who helped put the show together, and Jon Bon Jovi who sent out the autographed guitar we auctioned off. It was painfully obvious that Paul was loved dearly by his wonderful family and friends. We’re all gonna miss that left-handed guitar playin man. God took a piece of us all, when God took Paul. I’m Paul Shook up........Norman Nardini.

I am so sad at the loss of Paul "Shook" my sympathy to his family and all of his friends. I first met Paul while he was with playing with Norman Nardini and the Tigers. They came to NYC and rocked this town and captured a fan base at the height of New York's rock scene. Paul was a kind man and when he hit the stage he was a real Tiger on guitar. He will surely be missed. I regret that I won't be at Moondogs for the memorial, but I will be in spirit.

August 8, 2007

With deepest sympathy to Paul's family, it's sad to hear of his passing. Haven't seen or talked to Paul in probably 15-20 years. Me and many close friends were hard core Tigers fans back in the days of the Decade. Paul was not only a good musician, but also a really good guy. Two quick memories. We got to hang out quite a bit back then either at the rock clubs, Norman's softball team games, or even some parties that me and my friends had that Paul showed up at. I will never forget one party I had that Paul came to. He met my brother who is 11 years older than me, and never could quite understood how we could follow a band 2-4 days every week! Paul and him talked for probably an hour about music. Never seeing the band, my brother became a "Shook" fan! The second one is a decade classic. I met the Bon Jovi crew through the Tigers. I was working part time at the Decade. Jon Bon Jovi and the band come in and are surrounded by girls that were at the club. Jon kind of blows off the girls when he saw me, walked over said hi and asked me if I knew if Shook was coming out! He did later and I am sure thrilled lots of the ladies! Paul your memories will never be lost. The way you used to jam out "house of the rising sun" still rings in my head. Rest in peace.

Dear Suchma Family,
Sorry I'm a bit late to the game here...just found this guestbook. I don't even know where to begin! Paul Shook was quite simply one of my best friends and even though we lived in different cities for the last decade or so, we stayed in touch pretty dilligently. He was first and foremost a kind and caring soul and a first-rate musician. Paul taught me many things about guitar and was quite the guru for me in that dept. He helped me unleash a more original sound and approach and I'll always be grateful for that. He was a great collector of music and memorabilia as you all know, and hipped me to so much "inside" info on all my favorite artists. We worked together professionally (he tour- managed my first band, The Freewheelers) and so we got to do some extensive traveling. On our roadtrips he opened my eyes to the real America--hell, we even got into a little trouble out there. It was fun! Paul had a wicked sense of humor and a humility/realness that just is hard to find in these "know-it-all" days. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I know it may sound like a cliche, but I really think he's up there trading licks with his idols. I had a conversation with him just a month or two ago and it was full of love and laughter. He will always be one of my true heroes and main inspirations as a human being and musician.
God bless,
Luther.

Paul was not of this world. He was just stuck here for a while.

Like any seasond traveler stuck in a seedy nowhere bus station at 3am awaiting his connection, Paul made the best of his situation. And he touched many of us, and brought his unique view and joy of life into this world to brighten his small part of it.

But he has finally resumed his journey, and I'm sure that he is discussing his itinerary with his travel agent.

I hope that he finds peace. Fare the well, brother. See you on the other side.

I was heartbroken to hear about Paul's death. I'm sorry I was unable to pay my respects in person, I was out of town. You were in my thoughts and prayers. Paul was such a wonderful friend. Always had a huge smile and hug everytime I saw him. My family knows the pain you are feeling at this time as we also lost a sister two years ago. She also fought the good fight. Our comfort is that she is in Heaven shining down upon us. There is a saying that there are not stars in the skys but openings where our love ones look down upon us. There is one more opening up there tonight from where Paul is shining down and looking over us. Please know that I will be holding you close in thoughts and prayers during this very sad time. Dear Ellen, Bob, Mike, Patty, Chuck and Rege,

I'm deeply sadened to hear about your loss with Paul's passing. A few memories I'd like to share include listening to him practice on your porch while we were in the street playing some type of sports. He'd always give us a riff of "Cat Scratch Fever" when I'd yell over to him "play some Ted Nugent".

As we both moved on with our careers, travel was a prime topic I looked forward to while home on leave with the Air Force. He ALWAYS made it a point to look me up when I was in town because he wanted to hear about my duties and especially, the overseas travel stories. Paul would share his rock-n-roll stories about the places he'd been and what artists he encountered. And as a music fanantic, I must tell you this was one highlight of being "home".

I've shared this story with many fellow servicemembers and friends throughout the years because he is someone I've respected for a long time. He truly was a great person. He will be missed!

Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. May my Pittsburgh spirit be with you to help heal the sorrow. God Bless.

My symphathy to Paul's family and friends, which I count myself among. I met Paul back in the mid-ninties when my band was just getting started. He was a friend of Osh and Angelo and would hang out with us at the former Decade or at Wiggy's apartment. I always remember his kindness, laughter, and sense of fun. He was an elder statesman of rock & roll to us and we all respected him, enjoyed his stories, and appreciated his presence. I had not seen Paul in many years and so I was really sad to hear of his passing. He was above all a great guy. Like so many other rockers, under that imposing appearance of leather and denium beat a gentle and loving heart - one that did not go unnoticed by God. I know you are at peace now Paul and in the presence of other dearly departed friends so rock on and bend God's ear with a prayer for the rest of us who must carry on with daily struggles.

Word just got over here about Paul's passing including a phone call from Norman last night after the wake.

All of Paul's Cleveland friends send their thoughts and prayers to all in Pittsburgh, especially from the musicans that were on bills with Paul when he came over with Norman to play (way too many names to leave here).

I think the last time I saw Paul was the after show party for Bon Jovi downtown when the latter played out at Star Lake (I assume that's what it is still called)
a couple years ago. He looked good and was real upbeat.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, especially today.

I have always just thought of Paul as my "cousin". After reading the many beautiful things which have been written about Paul, it has given me a greater insight as to who he was and how much he meant to so many people. What a wonderful testament!

This past year was one of great personal change and growth for Paul and I believe he was more content and at peace than he had been in a very long time.

Although he is gone from our sight, he will remain in our minds and hearts forever.

I didn't get out of bed 'til 2PM and that seems so utterly apropos for Rock 'n Roll news like this!!! Such horrible, terrible news. You will be sorely missed, my brother... sorely missed. I offer my most profound sympathy and condolence your family and many friends. Oh, how I remember those halcyon days that now seem somehow eons past!!! I am proud that you called me friend, as I called you. Not even death can change that. Peace be upon you.

To My Dear Cousins: Ellen, Bob, Mike, Patty, Chuck and Rege

Our Deepest Sympathy and Love go out to all of you at this time.

Paul certainly was a legend in his own time. Although his life was way too short he completed his mission in life by touching so many people and making such a big influence in the music industry and with all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He also conquered his own personal misson over the last year for which we were all so VERY PROUD of him. He proved to so many how beautiful life was and he truly appeciated each day as a new beginning. I had a wonderful converstion with Paul a few months ago and he shared so many feelings about how much he loved and repected his brothers and sisters. What a wonderful time we had talking and laughing. I told Paul how much I loved him and how proud I was of his accomplishments. He was proud too...and I know he is smiling down on all of us today. His beautiful blue eyes will never be forgotten and I know I will see that smile again someday. God Bless You Paul and keep you in his Care! I know you will continue to "Rock On" in Heaven with the rest of the Family at your own "Family Reunion"

Love,

Cousin Alice, Dave & David Thomson

Paul was a true rock 'n' roll cowboy and bro. I'll never forget the day I met him, the years we spent hanging out, his corny jokes and mostly his infectious laugh.
He will be missed by many but his memories will live on forever. He was truly one of a kind.
God bless you and may you rest in eternal peace. GT

Shook,
My emotions have run the gamut the last few days. You are gone way too early, my friend. Although, we had not been in touch recently, I always thought of you. All of the great times we had. The clubs, concerts, our lunches at the Gandy, photo sessions with Papi, New Years Eve parties at my house, your crazy driving, and us trading clothes to wear. I will miss your infectious laugh and great smile. I think what I will miss the most are those mischevious blue eyes that sparkled so much. Farewell my friend, I shall never forget you. I am heartbroken right now. I was so happy to hear that you looked great and were at a good time in your life. All my love to you and your family, Your friend, Julie

Dude I dont know what im gonna do without you! I wish you could see Dalton grow up like you watched Cory and I. Even before my mom and Chuck were married you treated us just like family no matter what the situation. I wanna thank you so much for that. You went hrough a lot the past year and a half and you did it strong like I knew you would. I never thought I would see the day that I would have to say goodbye to you! Now that the day has come its gonna be harder than I ever imagined and everyones taking it hard including me! I love you and I'll make sure Dalton knows everything about you and how great you were to Cory and I. I'll never forget what you've done for me! I LOVE YOU!

You keep rocking your guitar like you always do!

Dear Suchma family,

Please accept my condolences for the loss of Paul, whom I’m sure, was well loved and will be missed. I hope that your happy memories of him last you a lifetime.

I worked with Paul during the hey days – which were many – of Norman Nardini and the Tigers. One of the most popular Tigers, Paul was a legendary and beloved guitar player, who, along with Norman, Whitey Cooper, the late Nason Gieg, Warren King, and a few others, helped create the “Pittsburgh Sound” in the late 1970s and 1980s. (A groove, which by the way, continues to inspire generations of local musicians.) It was a lot of fun, with a lot of great gigs, and a lot of good people: The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, the Agora in Cleveland, the China Club in New York, the Decade. (The list is too vast to summarize, and then there’s Europe.) There were hordes of fans, loyal fans. Photo shoots with tiger-striped guitars. Black muscle shirts. Buster. Guitars, amps, and vans at Woodstock Avenue in Swissvale and the Transport Records studios.

The women loved him, as did everyone else. Those were the days when we worked hard, were just glad to be alive and celebrated life in the Church of Rock ‘n’ Roll everyday. I was lucky to not only have known Paul, but to be his friend during one of the most exciting times of our youth. Amen.

Dear Ellen, Bob, Mike, Patty, Chuck, and Rege,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your brother, Paul, one of Millvale's favorite sons.
What a great talent and how wonderful that he knew so many and travelled so far and wide. He will always be remembered as a "really cool" guy and a great musician by those of us hanging at the Lincoln while he was starting out in his career.
I know words are hard to express at this time however upon his passing just remember this: "He can't fall out of the Universe." My condolences extended to you all. Peace.

When I heard the news of Paul's passing a piece of my heart was lost forever. We were such good friends and have so many great memories. I haven't seen him in about a year or so but everytime we did get together it was as if we didn't miss a beat. Paul and I had a unique relationship which lasted throughout 20 years plus. We had many a talks and helped each other through difficult times. He was simply the BEST and everybody loved him. I have my memories and photos to keep. My deepest condolenses to his family.

Paul was so much a part of the heart and soul of the Pittsburgh music scene. I can't say how many times in my travels around the country, when I would speak to a musician and would say I'm from Pittsburgh, they would say "do you know Paul Shook?" That's the kind of guy he was - he was so friendly and made an impression on everybody he met. My condolences to his family and all of his good friends back in the 'burgh.

Suchma Family
Growing up in Millvale brings back a lot of memories every time I return to work at my old house on Mary Street where my daughter now lives. I grew up with Paul. My sister Robin went to school with Mary Ellen, and my sister Debbie and I always hung out at the "big" house at the bottom of Mary Street with Paul and many others - I am deeply saddened by the loss of your brother and your thoughts and prayers are with your family in this truly difficult time.
