Edwin Fitchett Obituary

Edwin E. Fitchett

Poughkeepsie, New York - Edwin E. Fitchett, 98, died of natural causes at his home on Sunday September 6, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born April 20th, 1922 to Edwin B. Fitchett and Edith Ganse in Poughkeepsie, NY. He attended Poughkeepsie High School and graduated from Cornell University Class of 1946. He was a member of the army ROTC at Cornell. He was called up for active duty in 1943 as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in the 165th Field Artillery Battalion. He was stationed in the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of Japan. At the end of the war he was in charge of a Japanese prisoner of war camp. He was then given the responsibility of repatriating Japanese, Korean and Formosan prisoners back to their homelands aboard the Liberty Ship the John L. Sullivan. After his release from the Army as 1st Lieutenant, Ed joined Fitchett Bros. Dairy, the company his father and uncle started in 1904, eventually becoming Vice President and co-owner. He married his Cornell sweetheart, Bernice S. Henry of Eden, NY, on October 11, 1947.

Ed was an avid photographer recording much of his life experiences and travels on 16 mm movie film. Some were digitized such as his war experiences, available to be seen on his web site. He is a lifelong member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Cornell, recently being inducted into the AGR Hall of Fame. He was an original founder (1942) and active member of the Al Baker Assembly # 35 of the Society of American Magicians, Vice President and active member of the Vassar Brothers Institute, a travelogue society, and a 60 year member of the Dutchess County Rotary Club. He was an officer of the Dutchess County Milk Distributors for many years. He was also a member of the Hudson Valley Dairy Council of which he was president during his tenure. He was a lifetime and active member of the First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, serving on several positions including Chairman of the building fundraising committee and most recently serving on the board of missions. He was also a member of the Antique Study Club and past member of the Aquatic Explorers Scuba Club. He stayed connected by way of his knowledge of computer use. Ed and Bernie loved to travel throughout the United States, Mexico, many of the Caribbean islands (often scuba diving, a passion of his) and countries in Europe. They were avid snow skiers going to many areas in the northeast. When they were home they enjoyed their lakeside cottage on Candlewood Lake, Ct with family and many friends.

He will be remembered for his cheerful disposition, his devotion to his family, generosity of spirit and interest in all people.

Ed was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Bernice, his daughter in law, Christine W. Fitchett, his older sister Winnie (Seaman) and brother Alson. He is survived by his three sons, Gary (friend Cindy), Wayne (Pat), Neil (Chris) and seven grandchildren; Colleen (Andrew) Moser, Jocelyn (Kristoffer) Walker, Todd Fitchett (Marla), Keri (Peter) Powlison, Jessica Morgan (Kate), Marla (Michael) Cinilia and Jeremy Fitchett (Jordan). Ed is also survived by seven great grandchildren; Katherine & Emmett Moser, Carson & Rory Walker, Cameron Powlison, Bodhi Cinilia and Hiram Fitchett; as well as many nephews and nieces.

The family would like to express our profound appreciation for the skillful and thoughtful care provided by Ann Marie Wright.

We got to know Ed through my work relationship with his daughter-in-law Chris. While they were in high school, both our sons did gardening chores for Ed and Bernie, and then Ed after Bernie passed. Ed would feed them lunch and regale them with stories of his interesting and full life. Such was his gift that he could connect across generations. Sending warm thoughts to his family.

I had the pleasure of knowing Ed, for 40 years. We were both members of the same magic society. In all my interactions with him, he never once uttered an unkind statement, was always very positive, always had a cheerful smile and made you feel special in his company. He was a treasure and a true gentleman. He will be much missed...

I knew Ed since 1971. He was one of the founding members of the Poughkeepsie NY Magic Club in the 1930's (Society of American Magicians Al Baker Assembly #35). Ed was one of those few people that no one had a bad word to say about. He was the epitome of a Gentleman. He was a successful businessman and a fine Magician. He always had a smile, a greeting and a kind word. Every December Ed would bring their delicious Fitchett Egg Nog to our Holiday Magic Club meeting. Ed entrusted me to create a Facebook Page to display his (almost 100) pictures of our friend Walter Gibson's Home in Eddyville, NY. (Walter was the Creator and Author of The Shadow as well as being an renowned Author of books on Magic.) Ed was very generous. I once commented on a trick I had seen him perform years ago (blowing white silks through a cardboard tube and having them change to the color of various Lifesaver candies). Not long after I received a package in the mail containing that very trick. I will miss Ed's smile, stories and friendship.

Ed was one of the first and nicest men I met in the dairy industry. He was generous in his teachings of a complicated business. He was an excellent steward of Fitchett Brothers Dairy masterfully guiding it, along with Alson, during it's zenith. Ed will be remembered and missed. My condolences to son Gary and nephew Bill, who were lucky enough to work with Ed.
