Sophie Smith Obituary

Smith, Sophie

Kirkwood: On the beautiful autumn day of October 3, 2013 at the age of 86, with her loving family at her side, Sophie passed peacefully into her eternal life in heaven. Sophie joins her husband, Adolph; her mother and father, Andrew and Anna Krisevich; her brother, Michael; her sister and brother-in-law, Stephie and John Vitcavage; and her grandson, Ryan Smith. Sophie is survived by her loving son, Kenneth and his wife, Lorrie; her adoring grandchildren, Kori Smith and fiancé Dominico Rossi, Nathan Smith and his wife Kristi; and her five precious great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Taylen Flynn, Braksten and Colten Smith and Gianna Rossi. She is also survived by her nephews, John (Dana) and Alan (Kelli) Vitcavage; their children; and her good friend, Dorothy Colton. Sophie was born on April 18, 1927, in Factoryville, PA. She was raised in Scranton, PA. She graduated from Scranton Technical High School and married her sweetheart, Adolph. A few years later, they settled in Kirkwood, NY and began their careers at the CAE Link Corporation. Upon her retirement after 25 years of service, Sophie was very active with her church, the Kirkwood and First Ward Senior citizen groups, and "the gang" from Links who she met with every month for lunch. Sophie also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and friends, especially on Russian Christmas and Russian Easter. Grandma Sophie never ran out of hugs or lollipops for everyone who was fortunate enough to know her…Our family would like to thank the nurses at Wilson Hospital for their kindness to our family and loving care for Sophie during her short stay there. Sophie was a devout member of Saint Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Scranton for many years. She then joined the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church in Binghamton, where she went daily to pray for everyone that she knew. A funeral service will be offered by the Rev. Ilya Gotlinsky at 10AM on Tuesday at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, 54 Baxter Street, Binghamton. Burial will be at the Shady Lane Cemetery, S. Abington TWP, PA. Rev. Gotlinsky will conduct a prayer service Monday 6:30PM at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton where the family will receive friends Monday 3-7PM.

I worked with Sophie for 7 years at Singer Link in the Production Control Department. She was the sunshine in the office and made every day a pleasure. She was kind, positive thinking and was the perfect professional. I think about her often, her kind disposition and lovely demeanor. Thank you Sophie for making our lives a joy every day at Link Flight Simulation.

I meet Sophie many years ago when I started working at Link. She was quick to smile and kind hearted at treated me like she knew me her entire life. I moved back to the area and ran into Sophie and amazingly enough she remembered me, and we talked like we had not missed a day. She was a very special lady.
