I worked for Iris in the 1970s as her personal secretary. I've just found out about her passing. I learned a lot from her and told her I was so lucky to have worked with her. Pam was also involved in writing the Language Arts books. I illustrated the first one and still have a copy of that book. So interesting working for Iris. My mother passed away just a week or so after Iris, but didn't know about Iris. My late condolences to Iris's family. She was the first woman I knew who felt very strong about women's issues and equality.

Dear Ryan, Pam and family,
Your mom made incredible contributions to education and to the empowerment of many aspiring leaders. Co-authoring a few books with her and serving as associate director of South Bay Writing Project were pivotal moments in my career. Witnessing her stellar influence on so many challenged me, early in my career, to make a difference. I can recall many visits at her Willow Glen home with a team of writers crafting the next influential book or article. While her accomplishments are impressive, her inclusion and mentoring of so many others is even more impressive. Iris, thank you for the time we shared. Congratulations on a life well lived.
Humbly,
Mary Young Williams

Dear Pam, Ryan and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Iris was an original--brilliant, talented and always looking for a new challenge. She contributed greatly to AAUW (San Jose) and the Sierra Club. She was a gracious hostess and dear friend. She will be missed.
