John Moran Obituary

MORAN, Fr. John Paul, SSC
Father John Paul Moran died on June 11, 2021 at Dawn Hill Nursing & Rehab.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Frank and Katherine (Maloney) Moran. He was the brother of the late Frank and William Moran and is survived by his four nephews and three nieces.
Fr. Moran was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and entered the Columban Seminary at Silver Creek, NY in 1943. He was ordained on December 23, 1950 by Bishop John O'Hara. He was appointed to the Iba prelature in Zambales, Philippines in 1951 and by 1957 had produced a catechism in Zambal as well as a prayer book in the same language.
From 1959 and 1967 he was on the staff of the Columban Seminary in Silver Creek, NY where he was the spiritual director but was probably better known for teaching the students boat building.
He returned to the Philippines in 1967 and spent the next 25 years ministering in Zambales. He was appointed to the Columban formation program in Cebu and served seven years there before two hip surgeries forced him retire to the US. He then divided his time between Zambales and Rhode Island. He moved to the Columban Retirement House in Bristol in 2006.
Known as the captain of the "Santo Nino" in Bristol Harbor, Fr. Moran perused many activities in his retirement until a fall and hip injury led to his transfer to Dawn Hill where he lived in recent years.
His funeral services will be held on Friday, June 18th.
