John was a man I got to know as a teenager. I worked at the gas station and I saw how he treated people and saw, by his example that it mattered to help those who needed it and to be good to people. He had his own way of expressing it and I may emulate that more than I realized in my own life. Thank you John, you were more of a strong example that you ever knew

I was totally shocked when I heard that John had passed. He was just at our 55th high school reunion having a great time, laughing and joking with his classmates. He was a true "Townie", always supporting whatever our class did and attended our yearly reunions. What a great picture of John -- shows that boyish grin of his which will be remembered by many. He was a true gentle man. Rest in peace, John. A donation was sent in his memory from the EPHS Class of 1963 to Operation Delta Dog.

Dear Gorter family,

I am so saddened to hear of John's passing. We went to school together, from second grade through high school. I had a chance to speak with him briefly at our 55th EP class reunion, and I am so grateful that I did! He will be remembered as a true gentleman. May loving memories of him help to ease your sorrow in the days ahead.

With deepest sympathy,

The perfect picture of John with that smile showing his sense of humor. Often you visited my mom and dad and they loved it. Well you and "the Coach" can share stories again. One request say high to him for all of us. You were tough and kind and a credit to your family. You were a credit to East Providence High as well and the definition of a true "Townie"Darn few people can compare to the laughter you could bring to a room. True to your roots "Semper FI" John. Thoughts and prayers to all your family and may God hold you all in the palm of His hand

One of the finest men Ive ever known. Played against him while at LaSalle and played with him at Holy Cross. John Gorter is as good as it gets. The definition of a real man. RIP John.
