Michael Lewis Obituary

Michael W. Lewis Michael William Lewis, 50, of Findlay, Ohio, passed away at 10:47 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Blanchard Valley Hospital. Michael was born on December 6, 1964 in New Carrollton, Maryland to James William and Curtice (Loop) Lewis. His mother is deceased and his father James William Lewis (wife: Nancy) survives in Chambersburg, PA. He married Danya Niedzwiedzki in January of 1992 and she survives in Findlay along with their daughter, Sarah Lewis. Also surviving is a brother, Daniel (Paula) Lewis of Carrollton, Texas; an aunt Linda Smith of Cabin John, MD; a step-brothers, Matthew (Kimberly) Mellott and Benjamin (Nicole) Mellott; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Michael was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Law School where he graduated cum laude. He was commissioned into the Navy and served as a navigator in F-14s on the aircraft carrier Independence. Michael served in the first Gulf War and was a graduate of the Navy's Top Gun Fighter Weapons School. After his career in the Navy, he worked with several law firms and McKinsey Consulting firm before becoming a professor at the Petite Law School at Ohio Northern University. Michael was an expert in the field of international law. He published various articles and lectured widely on the rule of law in warfare, specifically in regards to the legal ramifications of the use of drones in the fight on terrorism. His work has been sighted by the Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals. Michael was invited by governments and organizations in the United States and around the world to speak at several international conferences on the topic. He also testified before the United States Congress as an expert in this field. The family will receive friends at KIRKPATRICK-BEHNKE FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Cynthia Holder Rich officiating. Burial will take place in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
