Grant Murray Obituary

Grant George Murray, a 30 year resident of Palos Verdes, died unexpectedly on July 24, 2011. Born to George and Hazel Murray at the Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto on July 2, 1943, Grant grew up in San Carlos, California. He joined the army in September of 1962 and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Upon his honorable discharge, he joined Western Airlines where he was employed for 20 years, eventually becoming vice president for the Los Angeles Region. His love of aviation brought him into many business endeavors which culminated in the development of MANI, an aviation services company at the Long Beach Airport with his business partner, Glenn Ray. He was a certified private pilot with both land and seaplane ratings. Besides aviation, his interests included playing the drums, listening to jazz music and spending time at his lake home in Minnesota. His family was the center of his life. Nothing surpassed his love of playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by Karen, his wife of 42 years; son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Dulce Murray; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda (Murray) and Korey Green, Erin (Murray) and Kevin Kochakji; four granddaughters, Carissa Murray, Savannah Green, Sierra Green and Madelyn Kochakji; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Jane Murray and nieces, Kimberly (Murray) Gifford, Jennie (Murray) Kostryukov and nephew, Matthew Murray. A memorial service will take place Saturday, July 30 at 11:00 am at Ascension Lutheran Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

I just learned of Grant's passing today when visiting Million Air at SBD. I met Grant when he opened the Million Air facility at Oxnard Airport. Grant was a true gentleman and I consider myself fortunate to have known him. He was a good friend and full of stories!! He always had a smile on his face and could light up a room instantly.

I'll miss Grant very much and wish his family all the very best.

Grant blessed our office for over 15 years with his perpetual cheerfulness and sense of humor. It was always a pleasure to see him and although he didn't love coming to the dentist he never failed to make us smile and laugh. He was a special person and we will miss him greatly. Our sympathies and prayers to his family. Linda Yang at Soutbay Periodontics.

I first met Grant while representing Signature Flight Support in the purchase of the Million air facility at Long Beach. This became more than just a negotiation. It was the start of a friendship that has lasted since then. I never met anyone more energetic or positive than Grant. He was a true entrepeneur. My life is better for knowing him. I will miss him tremendously.

Grant is a very unique person. His energy level and his expertise were of the highest level. He worked many hours perfecting his many skills, and his creativity solved many of Western's problems. One example: we wanted to get one more flight to Phoenix around 7 p.m. Scheduling said it couldn't be done. Grant, with his ever available scheduling chart worked after hours to find an answer. He came up with a solution, and we had that extra flight to Phoenix. While in Salt Lake, he proposed adding entires in and out of Salt Lake to the Airline Guide. He increased the load factor out of Salt Lake by 2 points, an amazing achievement. Grant and I worked together in Los Angeles, when I was Vice-President, Marketing, and he was VP-L. A. He was far and away the most intelligent, hardest worker, and cheerful. Never knew failure! After Westerm, he became the President of several companies, rising above the Wedstern/Delta merger. and gaining support for all his inovative activities. Karen was a true supporter, since Grant always worked long hours to support his family. Grant was one in a trillion, and will be sorely missed by his Western Family. Helen joins me in offering our prayers and condolences to all the family.

I knew Grant in San Francisco and in 1968 I asked him to join my team to create a new marketing region in the Upper Midwest, based in Minneapolis. His can do attitude and high energy were a great assist in this assignment. Four years later I returned to San Francisco and had the privilege to work with Grant as Regional Vice Presidents, he never lost his high energy and positive attitude. Kay and I want to offer our prayers and condolences to Karen and the family.

I had the pleasure of working for Grant quite some time ago at Million Air at the Long Beach Airport.

He was such a pleasure to work with and I learned so much from him.

In the morning when he walked into the office, he'd light up the room with his great big smile and I knew it was going to be a great day.

He was a true gentlemen and I'm proud to have known him.

My hearts go out to the family.

He will truly missed by all that have known him.

My day was made sad when Glenn Ray called with the unfortunate news. I worked with Grant in Las Vegas where he was president of Eagle Canyon/Scenic Airlines and the Las Vegas Executive Air Terminal. Our companies and we as individuals are better for the opportunity to have known and worked with Grant. He was creative and willing to take on difficult (and sometimes impossible) tasks. He was truly a great guy in his personal and business life and we will always have fond memories. We should all be blessed to know more friends like Grant. Our sincere sympathy to his family.

I first met Grant at Western Airlines in San Francisco in 1966. I was a brand new employee, and he was working two check in positions down from me at the ticket counter. His sense of humor with customers and his quick take on people was uncanny. Many years later we met again in Los Angeles. You had to run fast to stay up with him. We lived the boom and turbulent times of the airline industry together. A good person.
