George Marney Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - George E. Marney, 71, of Briar Hill Rd., passed away peacefully Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after a long battle with Vascular Dementia.
Born in Northampton March 28, 1946, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary (Salamon) Marney. George was a lifelong resident of Leeds and Northampton until his illness progressed, later living with his family in Williamsburg, and at Armbrook Village assisted living in Westfield.
Educated in local schools, George was a 1964 graduate from the Smith Vocational High School electrical department. After graduating he worked for the former Tyburski Electric company in Easthampton for many years. In 1974 George started his own electrical contracting business based in Leeds, and was very successful, which helped lay the foundation for two electrical contracting businesses that are still in operation today. In the late 1970s George and his friend, and former co-worker Stanley (Buster) Symanski formed a partnership and started M&S Electric Inc. based in Hatfield. In 1988 George went back to being a sole proprietor Electrician which he continued to do for many years. In 1998 he formed a partnership with his son Jeff, and together they started Marney Electric, Inc.
Starting out with one van and a rented garage bay, the new business quickly grew to a full service electrical contracting business with a team of electricians, a fleet of service vehicles, a full time office staff, and a larger facility in Florence to accommodate the growth of the business. George retired in 2009 after 35 very successful years as a self-employed electrical contractor. In 2016 he got to witness the small business that he started back in 1974 move back home to Leeds, to an even larger facility that was needed once again due to the growth of the business, which made him very proud.
George served in the Army National Guard, and was a member of the Northampton Elks lodge #997. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, boating and snowmobiling, as well as spending time at his camps in Whately Ma., and Forest Lake in New Hampshire. He also enjoyed gardening and was a Patriots fan, but his biggest joy was spending time with his two granddaughters.
George is survived by his son Jeffrey Marney and his wife Jennifer of Williamsburg, his two granddaughters, Madison and Riley Marney, his sister Harriet Abrams and her husband Johnnie of Kentucky, his sister in law Karen Marney of Hatfield, his brother in law Gus O'Grady of Florence and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jenna Dawn Marney, his sister, Helen O'Grady, his brother Charles Marney, and his former wife Dawn Marney.
Calling hours for George will be Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton.
All other services will be private. All other services will be private. In keeping with George's wishes, he requested that in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.
George's family would like to extend their thanks to the staff members at Armbrook Village in Westfield, East Longmeadow skilled nursing center, Wingate of Hampden, and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for the outstanding care George received in his final months.
