Denis Marney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Soxman Funeral Homes. Ltd. /Roth Chapel on Feb. 21, 2026.
Denis (Denny) James Marney, age 83, of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Feb. 19, 2026, at 11:11 p.m. He died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and other medical issues.

Denny is preceded in death by his parents, Sarah (McKinney) and Thomas Marney; his wife, Carol Bucher Marney; his brothers: Jack (Barb), Gerald (Mary), and Ronald (Violet) Marney; and his sisters: Marissa Cummings and Charlotte (Joseph) Zalenski.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Alison Marney (Frank Varrati); beloved grandchildren, Michael and Maria Cooley; sister, Sr. Camilla Marney; sister, Kathleen (George) Peck; brother, Cyril Marney; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Keyser; brother-in-law, Robert (Vicki) Bucher; cousin, Gena Fae McKinney; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and friends.

Denny was born on October 9, 1942; son of the late Sarah and Thomas Marney, who immigrated to the United States from Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up in Penn Hills with eight siblings and loved being a member of the Marney clan. While growing up, Denny was a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America and Penn Hills High School Cross Country Team. After graduating from high school, Denny joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years. Shortly thereafter, he met Carol Bucher, who was the love of his life. They shared nearly 40 years together before God called her home.

Denny earned a drafting degree from Triangle Tech and worked at Westinghouse Electric Corporation for more than 15 years. His technical mind took him to Amcom Office Systems where he serviced and repaired office equipment, and he retired from the Allegheny County Jail as a Corrections Officer, where he treated all prisoners with dignity and respect.

While working full-time and raising a family, Denny joined the U.S. Army National Guard and served for 16 years. He accumulated 20 years of military service between his time in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army National Guard.

Denis was a Eucharist Minister at St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church (now Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish), a member of the Knights of Columbus Color Corps, and member of Monroeville Area Metal Detecting Club. He provided after-school care to his grandchildren for more than a decade and proudly attended almost every activity they participated in.

He will be remembered for his kind and generous heart, his stories, and his love of the Pittsburgh Steelers and sweet treats.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to one of Denny's favorite charities: the Knights of Columbus Council 4925 at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish, St. Jude Research Hospital, or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
