Carl was born in Oakland, CA to Fred Stolz and Barbara Haviland Stolz, who settled in Moraga, CA in 1960, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carl graduated in 1968 from Campolindo High School and lettered in cross country running. He was an Eagle Scout, and active at St. Anselm's Episcopal Church in Lafayette, CA. Always fascinated with radio, Carl started his radio broadcasting career in the 1970s at Berkeley's KPFA, where he hosted an evening show called "Cruisin' with Crazy Carl", featuring early Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues music. In the 1980s he migrated to Eugene, OR, working as a radio engineer for the University of Oregon's student broadcasts, and hosting "Breakfast with the Blues" at KRVM. Next was 20 years hosting "Blues Power", his long-running Saturday afternoon show on KLCC Public Radio, the station sponsored by Lane Community College. Carl's broadcasting work was a labor of love; he earned his living running the recycling program for the University of Oregon. He acquired a massive collection of R&B and R&R music over his lifetime, and was extremely knowledgeable about the music, the artists and music scene. A quiet man who stayed in the background, he was a great storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor, who kept his listeners fascinated and smiling. His goal was always to lift people's spirits with music and laughter, which he did for over 50 years. Carl leaves behind his sisters, Diane Stolz Friedman of Washington DC, and Elaine Stolz Sherwood of Bozeman MT, and her children Calvin Sherwood of Sacramento CA and Thea Sherwood Johnson of Bozeman MT.
