Rose Hutchinson Obituary

Rose Elizabeth Hutchinson
June 24, 2013 - April 25, 2020
Rose Adams Hutchinson passed peacefully at home Saturday, April 25 after living life to the fullest for nearly 107 years.
Rose was born in Goshen,IN, near South Bend, the daughter of Charles and Ruby (Hatch) Adams whose ancestors had arrived on the Mayflower. The youngest of 4, she was predeceased by her two older sisters and brother Mary Emma (Rich), Pauline, Herbert. Her father owned the Adams store downtown, now the City Historical Museum.
Active, creative, thoughtful, Rose was someone you immediately liked. She was interesting and interested. Rose excelled at sports. She was the Goshen City tennis champ. She earned a math degree from Goshen College -unusual for a 1935 woman. Rose was overjoyed with a 2018 visit by the Goshen college president, honoring her as their oldest alumna. Nothing is more memorable than hearing the two of them sing the school song.
She met Thomas Hutchinson on the tennis courts. He was her soulmate. They wed in the chapel of Notre Dame University where Tom had graduated. This started a 54 year adventure until his death in 1992. A family was started, settling in Bend in 1944. Rose loved her eight children and liked to boast that all received degrees as Oregon Ducks. She was very involved at St. Francis Catholic Church, especially its' school, where at least one child enrolled for 25 years. She was Regent of the Catholic Daughters and in the Altar Society. She loved golfing with friends at Bend Golf Club and volunteering with Civic groups. When the kids were grown, she worked as the Deschutes County law librarian.
In retirement, Rose and Tom traveled to Africa, Europe, Russia, but visiting her children was her favorite. Rose moved to Beaverton in 1999 to live with her daughter Hilary who lovingly cared for her until her death. Painting gave her a lot of pleasure, and in her 90s she switched to water colors.
Rose loved to play bridge, and the camaraderie of her St.Pius X group. She was an engaging competitor, loving to win, but laughing when the cards failed. Rose once said her secret to long life was bridge and blueberries, but that was coupled with great humor and an embrace of all life offered.
In addition to her brother, sisters and spouse, Rose was predeceased by two children: Mary Rose, Bend, and Thomas, Jr. (Allison), Longview. Surviving are: Stephen (Kathryn), Eugene; Hilary, Beaverton; Anne Perez (Jose), San Jose, CA; Timothy (Leslie), Portland; Julie Foster (Neal), Brookings, SD; Christopher (Nancy), Cranberry Township, PA. She leaves 11 grandchildren: Sarah Ostendorf (Chad), Mark (Shelley), Scott, Tina Perez, Carlos Perez, Ellen Whitely (Scott), Peter (Kirsten), Ian, Mckenna Barlow (Luke), Nicolas (Kim), Jennifer, and 10 great grandchildren.
Memorial services at a later date. Ashes will be interred beside her husband and daughter at Pilot Butte Cemetery, Bend. Donations In Rose's name to the America Macular Degeneration Foundation https://www.macular.org/how-donate or OPB opb.org. Springer and Son, Aloha,OR in charge of arrangements.

Rose was one of those delights, unexpected, that entered our lives through Hilary. She remains in our memories as so sharp and funny and fun -- we could tell where Hilary got her own sense of how to live. Our condolences to her family, and Hilary, we are thinking of you and hoping that these difficult times will pass. Rose will be with you forever.

While I did not know Mrs. Hutchinson, I grew up in Goshen in the 1950s and 1960s and attended church with her father and her sister Pauline. A neighbor here in Portland chanced to read her obituary and, knowing where I am from, called my attention to it. While I offer my condolences on her passing, what a pleasure it was to read about a life so obviously well lived! May she rest in peace.

Rose was one of a kind. I will never forget her. I met her while she lived with Hilary in Beaverton. I was so impressed with her sharp brain and quick wit. She makes living advanced years look like a piece of cake.

I have fond memories of Rose and her family from Bend as she was a good friend of my mother, Eleanor McMenamin Deeks. They liked to play bridge together and talk about their families. Rose was always cheerful and happy to help with any church or school event. Rose - Rest In Peace
