Lloyd Whipple Obituary

Lloyd A. Whipple, Sr., 69, of Fair Haven, passed peacefully Thursday, November 10, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lloyd was born in Middletown Springs on May 15, 1942. He was the youngest son of Edith (Richardson) Whipple and Jack Whipple.

He married Ruth E. Rogers on December 14, 1963, in Wallingford, Vermont.

He attended schools in Middletown Springs and Rutland Town. He became well known in the trucking industry by working at J.R. Loomis, Moon Freightlines, A.B. Swan and finally owning his own transportation business, Lloyd Whipple Incorporated for 29 years. Lloyd cherished his employees and business associates through the years and held a celebratory summer picnic in the summer of 2010 to show his appreciation for all of them.

Lloyd was always an active member of his community; he was a proud member of the Vermont Truck and Bus Association, Loyal Order of the Moose, held many ranks in the Castleton Volunteer Fire Department and a served as a Little League Coach for Castleton. He was an active member of the Castleton Federated Church and a very proud member of the Castleton Lions Club, achieving the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services.

Lloyd loved the outdoors and being out in nature. He enjoyed hiking with his family and hunting with his son. He had an avid interest in black bears and enjoyed reading about them and meeting Ben Killham, a New England black bear expert.

There was nothing more important to Lloyd than family; he is survived by his loving wife, Ruth. His daughter Cindy and her husband Craig Anderson, their children Tanner Timmerman, Colton Timmerman, Lacey Timmerman and Donald Anderson. His son Lloyd Jr. (Bub) and his wife Amy, their children Zachary Whipple and Cassidy Whipple. His daughter Lori Whipple and her husband David McKie and their daughter Ema Whipple McKie. His brother Jack Whipple and his wife Marie. His brother Stanley Bourne and his wife Judy. Two brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews and many "adopted" grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, his granddaughter Victoria Timmerman, one brother, two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

A memorial service to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at 10:30 AM at the Castleton Federated Church. Friends may call at the Durfee Funeral Home on Monday, November 14, 2011, from 4 PM until 7 PM.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in Lloyd's memory to the Castleton Federated Church, P.O. Box 57, Castleton, VT 05735 or the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Memorial Center, Office of Development, Hinman 7070, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756-0001.

Arrangements are under the direction of Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Dear Ruth & family,
I can't tell you how sad I am to learn of Lloyd's passing. Cindy told me he was struggling. I know the pain and heart ache that goes with caregiving to a loved one. You were always there for him. He put up one hell of a fight. I will always remember his boyish smile when I cracked a joke. He could light up a room with that smile. He will be greatly missed. He is in the arms of our lord now and will suffer no more. I love you guys lots.

Ruth and kids,
I will never forget the kind person Lloyd was. He always knew how to apreciate the kids around the south side of Fair Haven. Iam sure that he is alot more comfortable now. I will always remember him and everything he has done for me and our family. It could be as simple as letting me borrow a wrench to fix my bike. But lord knows there are many more . be strong
