David Lane Obituary

LANE, David E.
David Elton Lane was born in Marysville, CA on Feb. 15, 1928, the son of Lloyd and Audrey Lane. The youngest of four boys, his brothers were Daryl, Robert, and Donald. He grew up and was educated in Sacramento, attending Sacramento High School where he played basketball, baseball, and was awarded the highest honors for his academic and athletic achievements. Mr. Lane earned a BA in History from Sacramento State College. He is survived by his cherished and beloved wife, Donna Parsons Lane; daughters, Lauren Lane Adamson and Alexis Goldberg; stepdaughter, Dr. Margaret Parsons Sander (David Sander); stepson, Isaac Parsons; his wonderful grandsons, Brennan Dean Parsons, Charles David Sander, Nathaniel Niklas Goldberg, Alec Camaren Adamson; extended family, Martha, Jack and Katy Lewis; numerous nieces and nephews, dear friends, and a son Wesley. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his adored son, Niklas David Lane. Mr. Lane started his long and successful real-estate appraisal career with the California State Department of Highways - appraising and acquiring property for regional highway projects. He went on to become Chief Land Agent for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, responsible for purchasing and acquiring the properties in the largest slum west of the Mississippi, the lower end of Sacramento, now known as Old Sacramento. In 1965, Mr. Lane left the Redevelopment Agency to establish his own business, David E. Lane, Inc. (continued to date) as an independent fee appraiser and counselor. His first assignment was for the City of Sacramento, purchasing and acquiring the property for the Sacramento Convention and Community Center. Later he was an expert witness for the Sacramento Library Project and closely involved in many other civic and historical endeavors aimed at renewing and enhancing the downtown of the city he loved. Locally, his work expanded to include Arco Arena, the Sacramento International Airport and large projects such as Serrano. A nationally known corridor expert, he appraised the majority of the property for Sacramento's light rail projects as well as corridors in Yolo and Placer counties, the Bay Area, and the State of Nevada. Mr. Lane's skills and expertise took him all over the western U.S., and he worked with virtually all of the region's governments, public agencies, banks, and real estate developers. He was known for deftly handling the largest and most complex projects, as well as having great and sought-after skills in courtroom testimony. Recognized as a pre-eminent real estate appraiser in the Sacramento region, Mr. Lane earned rare credentials from the Appraisal Institute, and the Counselors of Real Estate - the only person in Sacramento to be invited to join their membership. Other memberships included the International Right of Way Association (President of the Sacramento Chapter 1978-1980) and the California Probate Referees Association. Appointments by the State Controller were as a State Inheritance Tax Referee (1968-1975), and as a California State Probate Referee (1996-2009). Mr. Lane was known and widely respected for his integrity, ethics, knowledge, and expertise. Personally, he was admired and loved for his delightful sense of humor, his loyalty, kindness, and thoughtfulness. He enjoyed extensive international and regional travel with Donna, completing crosswords and puzzles, reading historical non-fiction, newspapers, the comics, music, sports, and playing with his devoted canine companions, Sasha and Emily. Mr. Lane passed away on May 15, 2009. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 22 at the Campus Commons Clubhouse, 650 Commons Dr. Arrangements by W.F. Gormley and Sons.

I was remembering Nik tonight and am sorry to learn of Mr. Lane's death. I was the little blonde girl who helped with Nik's patterning exercises, sometimes wearing Nik's favorite color purple. Percy used to call me 'Nic- Ole!'. I have so many wonderful memories of William Land Park rides, movies and fun times together with him & Nik. I last saw Mr. Lane at Nik's funeral and will never forget the hug he gave me when he realized who I was. My thoughts and condolences are with you all.

Dave's older brother Daryl was my grandfather. Although I did not see Dave often, the times I did left a lasting impression. I remember Dave as a kind and loving man who always treated me like we spoke everyday of our lives. I also remember his ability to turn a sad situation into a joyous one with his wonderful sense of humor. I am sorry I was unable to attend the services today, but please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Donna and Family,

Please accept our sympathy. David was a character we will always remember and cherish. He could be cantankerous at times but it was all in good fun! I enjoyed his stories of his times up here in Humboldt County and enjoyed working with him as a Probate Referee.
