Gordon Lark was my undergraduate advisor. He took me under his wing when I was a sophomore in college. I had no experience I just knew I wanted to work with plants. His lab was mapping the soybean genome at the time. He had me record various phenotypes of genetically different soybean lines. In the summer we would plant in a research garden that ironically is now the location for the research building I currently work in. He had a great sense of humor and would tell me that I was outstanding in my field.
He encouraged young women to study science and often brought in summer high school students to work in the lab to get experience. My younger sister and her best friend were included in his summer program. He advised to me apply for the university's undergraduate research program which I was awarded. Even after I left his lab he would still advise me and helped me get amazing research positions. I am honored to have received so much guidance from him. He had a huge impact on my career and my life. His presence will be missed by so many people.
