Barbara Winder Obituary

1931 ~ 2017
Barbara Ann Woodhead Winder, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis on June 25, 2017.
She was born May 9, 1931 to Willard Verl Woodhead and Marguerite Hand Woodhead in Midvale, Utah, the oldest of 4 children.
She was a happy child and a light to all who knew her. She was the student body secretary at Olympus Junior High School. At Granite High School, she served as the Girls League president during her senior year. After graduation from Granite High, she attended the University of Utah where she was involved in Alpha Chi Omega, Lambda Delta Sigma, LDS Institute, and as a Spur in a national service organization.
Barbara then met and dated Richard William Winder. They were married in the Salt lake Temple on January 10, 1951. She and Richard lived on Winder Lane in Granger Utah where they reared their 4 children. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She found great joy in gathering her loved ones together, both friends and family, and was a warm and welcoming hostess to all. Her love of beauty and talent for organization was expressed in these activities and in all she did.
She had many Christ-like virtues which were manifested in a lifetime of love and service. In the community, she worked in the PTA, on the National Dairy Council, and as a hostess at the Beehive House. As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in all the ward and stake auxiliaries. She was the National President of Lambda Delta Sigma, a member of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA Board, a member of the Relief Society General Board, and the Relief Society General President. She served alongside her husband Richard as president of the San Diego Mission, the Czechoslovakia Mission, and the Family and Church History Mission. She accompanied her husband to the Czech Republic as he served as Patriarch there. Barbara served as the Assistant Matron of the Jordan River Temple, the 1st Matron of the rebuilt Nauvoo Temple, and a temple ordinance worker thereafter. Richard and Barbara were an amazing team who supported one another in every service opportunity and leadership calling that came to them.
She is survived by their children: Richard Jr. (Debi Buchanan), Susan (John S.) Tanner, George (Nancy Parker), Robert (Rosanne Barker), sister Nancy (Nate) Aiken, and brother David (Marilyn Foster); 15 grandchildren and 25 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Willard Noel.
In her honor funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 1 at the LDS Church building located at 1409 West Shields Lane (9800 South), South Jordan, Utah. Viewings will be Fri. June 30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Valley View Funeral home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley, Utah and prior to the funeral on Sat. from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at the church building. The burial will be at the Valley View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the LDS Missionary or LDS Temple funds. Funeral Directors: Valley View Funeral Home.

Barbara was a grand lady. She and her husband, Richard, were two of the finest people I knew in Granger. My fondest memory of them was when they became the Mission President and wife at the Nauvoo Temple. We were visiting family in nearby Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. All of my Iowa family were either Baptist or Catholic and we took them to tour the Nauvoo Temple before the dedication. We were able to meet with President and Sister Winder and introduce them to my family members. They were so cordial and made a great impression on my family.

To the Winder Family,
My best memory of Richard and Barbara was eating lunch with both of them in the Jordan River Temple cafeteria. We had a wonderful visit and she shared all the family news of her children with me, including the upcoming release of her daughter Susan from being the General Young Women President before it was widely known. Wonderful people. Good memory.

Barbara and Richard were some of the finest people in the community. They were both very active throughout their lives in the mission of serving others. I was proud to call them friends.

We express our love and condolences to the Winder family. We first became associated with the Winder family as Richard was a member of the 14th Quorum of seventy in the fifties. The annual seventies party was held at Winder Dairy. Susan was a young girl and Barbara assisted on the food committee. Ned was the life of the party. Edwin K. Winder, Barbara.s father-in law served as a counselor to John D. Hill stake president.
Barbara was a noble lady and wonderful mother. We wish we could be at the funeral.

Before we became acquainted in Church service, I met Barbara Winder at the Utah State Capitol. While serving in the State Legislature and she in RS, we visited about common concerns as she kept informed about issues involving women and families.
My memory as we later served together during the Salt Lake Olympic period, was her energetic and helpful manner. When I read about her years of service, the enduring capacity of her heart and spirit is truly without equal.

My love to the family. May you be blessed for sharing your dear mother with so many who benefited from her service.

Every time I open my kitchen cupboard and see the gift Barbara and Rich gave to Jim and me when we were married, I am reminded of how cheerful and helpful Barbara was and that she has been a motivating example to me. I am reminded of the times we visited at family activities and I picture her busy in the kitchen helping me or her mother who was Jim's Aunt Marce. I think of her brothers and sister, too, and feel filled with love for Uncle Verl's family. God bless you!

We were privileged to know the Winders when we lived in Czechoslovakia, and as it changed to Czech Republic. What a light they both were to all of us! Sister Winder always went out of her way to greet us and our, then, small children with words of encouragement and kindness. We have treasured her words and example all these years. She and President Winder were wonderful examples. Condolences to the family.

Barbara was a grand soul. It was my joy to serve with her on the Relief Society General Board. When she and Rich served in Czechoslovakia, I brought them a large suitcase full of canned goods she needed because many foods were scarce in Prague at that time. Barbara wrote the dearest thank you notes. I never lifted a finger to help her without receiving a handwritten message from her. She was a great inspiration to me and a woman I've tried to emulate. What a glorious legacy she has left in both her family and her Church service.
With my love, thanks, and deepest respect,

Sister Winder was my mission mother when I served in Czechoslovakia. I remember her visits each month and at zone conferences. She always had something for us like zucchini bread or banana bread which helped me overcome my homesickness. So many wonderful memories of her. Thank you Sister Winder. Your impact on those around you is profound and your legacy will live on forever.

Dear Susan and entire Winder Family, I express to you my heartfelt sympathy at the passing of your beloved mother. Please be assured of my love and prayers in your behalf at this tender time of parting.
Sister Winder was a model of humility, courage, and steadfast devotion to her family. Her example of devotion as wife, mother, and grandmother influenced the lives of loved ones and all with whom she came in contact.
My wife and I worked so closely with Richard and Barbara at the Jordan River Temple. Your cousin John Q. was my assistant when I served as president of the French Mission and later was my beloved stake president.
I rejoice with you in our knowledge and testimony of the Plan of Happiness and look forward of giving our beloved Richard and Barbara big hugs when I go to the Spirit World which could be any time now in my 93 year and recently having attended the dedication of the Paris Temple as the guest of my missionary Apostle Neil Andersen.
I send you my love and blessings.

I had the special opportunity of serving as Sister Winder's secretary when she served as Relief Society General President. She was always a happy and gracious daughter of our Heavenly Father. She treated everyone as a member of her own family. I am so grateful to her for all she taught me and for sharing her spiritual attributes with me. She is one of my special friends and I love her. WE have counted Richard and Barbara Winder among our choicest friends. Our two years in Nauvoo serving with them in the temple presidency was perhaps the most memorable experience of our lives. Barbara was a classic Latter-day Saint, as a leader and as a friend with a ready smile for everyone within her reach. We know of the faith in our Savior which they passed on to their fine family, and wish all of them a lifetime of happy memories of their father/mother/grandparents
We are happy to make a contribution of $300 in Barbara's memory to the LDS Church Temple Patrons Fund

I will miss her beautiful, cheerful countenance. She made you feel like the most important person in the world. She sat behind me in the Jordan North 2nd Ward and said to me, as a young mother of two, "You are so calm and patient." She was my example for so many years. Oh, how I loved her!
