Richard Kilman Obituary

KILMAN
Richard Jay Kilman
1952-2012

Richard Jay Kilman, born October 21, 1952 in Fredericksburg, TX, passed away March 19, 2012 in San Antonio, TX, surrounded by a host of family and an enormous amount of love. A compassionate man, he was the most awesome father, grandfather, brother, and friend to multitudes of people all around the globe. Richard was the father of Ryan Birks-Kilman (wife Laurel) of Kissimmee, FL; Kelly Kilman Anderson, and Katy Kilman of San Antonio, TX. He was the grandfather to Alison, Erin, Katie, Cassidy, Lily, and Sarah of Kissimmee, FL; Mikayla, Kirstin, Rogan, and Evelyn of San Antonio. He is also survived by sisters Mary Martin and Melanie Roller (husband Frank) of Pipe Creek, TX, and brother Ronald Kilman of Austin, TX. He is also survived by 5 nieces and 4 nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Gabriel and Evelyn Feuge Kilman of Fredericksburg, TX; grandparents Harry and Lydia Rusche Feuge of Fredericksburg, TX; Luvena Kilman Knutson of Oakland, CA; John Kilman of Denver, CO; and niece Christina Nielsen of San Antonio, TX. As a boy Richard earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a 1971 National Honor Society graduate of Fredericksburg High School and a 1972 graduate of Control Data Institute in Dallas. He was employed by eCommerce Industries. Richard's profession in computer systems, software, and communications carried him throughout the United States as well as Europe and Africa. He made the Boerne/San Antonio area his home for the last 30+ years. He was passionately involved in Ham Radio as a licensed operator, enjoyed astronomy, NASCAR racing, fishing, and photography. Carrying on the love of photography from his father, Richard was lovingly referred to by many as "Paparazzi." His sense of humor was admired and enjoyed by all he came into contact with. Even in his last days he didn't pass up the chance to shed humor in light of the situation. He will be truly missed by so many whose lives he touched in some way along his journey. Special thanks from the family goes out to Dr. Charles Duncan and the staff of St. Luke's Baptist ICU and Vitas Innovative Hospice. A memorial celebration of Richard's legacy is planned to be held May 6th at 2 pm in the New Braunfels area. Messages of love and condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected] or www.facebook.com/r1chk. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Boy Scouts of America, American Veterans, or a charity of your choice in his memory.

In the photo of our 1967 Philmont 'Expedition' (that I posted in July 2017) Richard is in the second row (standing) furthest-to-the-right (in his dark green Explorer Scout shirt). /// (I'm puzzled - I thought that I'd included a legend with the photograph but don't see it now.)

Richard was an Amateur Radio Operator (a 'ham'). He originally held the Call KD5ODJ; when he upgraded from 'General' to 'Extra' Class license he changed his Call (Sep 2003) to N5BBI.

Fifty years ago today (July 10, 1967) Richard and I and 10 other Boy & Explorer Scouts were starting our hike through the mountains and valleys of the Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. Richard was one of four Scouts in our 'Expedition' ('709I3') from Fredericksburg and I was one of five Scouts from San Marcos. /// The Scouting 'Capital Area Council', based in Austin, had put-out-the-word many months earlier to Scouting organizations in central Texas asking who wanted to go to Philmont that year ? (enough Scouts were needed to mostly fill-up a chartered Continental Trailways bus that would take the Scouts to-and-from Philmont) There were about 40 of us making the trip from Austin to Philmont (just outside Cimmarron, NM) that July - Scouts plus three adult advisors. When we got to Philmont (on Sunday; July 9th 1967) we were broken-down into three 'Expeditions' - 709I1, 709I2 and 709I3 (the next-to-the-last character is the capitol letter 'eye' not a number) as we had arrived on July 9th ('709'), 'I' as we were the 9th group getting an arrival number on that Sunday, and then individual 'Expeditions' 1, 2 and 3. The twelve kids (plus our adult advisor Mr John Hunt and the Philmont 'Ranger') that Richard and I were a part of was Expedition 'I3'. /// Going to Philmont is one of those events that you never forget and on this 50th Anniversary of our 'Expedition' starting its trek my thoughts go back to those smiling kids (in the photo of our 'Expedition' - which is available on-line now). Adios Richard and to the other members of my Expedition. (signed) Paul Norman Nix; July 10th 2017)

What a wonderful friend I lost when Rich died. He saved me from a lot of personal mental anguish when I first spoke to him after Tim left maytech. At that time I REALLY depended on Tim and here he was gone. Rich stepped in, took care of everything current and then showed me many ways to make it better. Rich helped us earn a profit for many years. He was a wonderful friend and I will miss him forever.
