George Casseb Obituary

February 29, 1924 - April 25, 2018
George Casseb, a lifetime resident of San Antonio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family.

George was born on Leap Day, February 29, 1924, in San Antonio, Texas to Solomon Nagem Casseb and Annie Marie Barberio Casseb. He was one of seven children.

After attending John B. Hood Elementary School and Washington Irving Middle School, George graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School at the age of 16 and then enrolled in St. Mary's University. During his 3rd year at St. Mary's University, he joined the United States Army Aviation Program. He completed studies at the University of Chicago Institute of Meteorology before being assigned to Army Air Fields in the United States, China, India and Burma Theater, serving as a meteorologist on flights to the front lines to deliver food and medicines. Following World War II and a promotion to Captain, the Air Force returned him to the University of Chicago where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Mathematics and Meteorology, and minoring in Physics and Chemistry.
He again served his country as a meteorologist during the Korean Conflict.

George received his Master's Degree from St. Mary's University and served on the school's faculty as a math professor. He then served as Assistant City Manager of San Antonio before entering the banking field in 1954. Starting as a bank cashier, he worked his way to being named president of West Side State Bank in San Antonio in 1962. He remained in that capacity until his retirement in 1992.

George served on the Board of Directors of the Guadalupe Community Center and the San Antonio River Authority. He was appointed to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Commission and to the Selective Service System Local Draft Board No. 7. He was a past president of the St. Mary's University Alumni Association and a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3211. He was also active in numerous civic and social organizations including the Club Sembradores de Amistad de San Antonio, the West Side Lions Club, the American Institute of Bankers' Association, the Italo-Americans Men's Club, the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Bankers Association and the Kiwanis Club, receiving various honors from many of these organizations. He was a Director Emeritus of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo and a former member of the San Antonio Country Club and the Argyle.

George met the love of his life, Constance Margaret Bertetti, at a dance held at the Olmos Dinner Club on the coldest night of the year 1949. They were married on May 27, 1950. They proceeded to have six children and the time of their lives!

George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Constance Margaret Bertetti Casseb; daughters, Margaret Ann Casseb and Joann Casseb Hinchey and her husband, William Hinchey, MD; sons, John Bertetti Casseb, Frank James Casseb and his wife, Liliana, and Edward Solomon Casseb and his wife, Bernadette; grandchildren, John W. Dearest Casseb family,
Our sincerest and deepest sympathy to your great family. There is no one who could walk in your father's shoes, have his polished manners or his humor. He was the kindest man my family knew. He will certainly be missed but not forgotten. Much love Claire Rubiola Steves and Charles Rubiola, Jr.
