Dale Schissler

Dale Richard Schissler, a longtime resident of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the age of 74, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1937, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Lloyd and Dorothy Schissler.

Dale attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating with a bachelor of science in zoology and entomology in 1959. He was an avid fan of the Nittany Lions throughout his life. He earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Chicago in 1964.

Dale was a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University for a year. He served as a project consultant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1964-68 and was a psychology professor at Northeastern University in Boston from 1965-71 and at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside from 1971-74. He came to San Antonio to work for USAA in 1974 in the corporate research department, retiring as a director in 2002.

Dale married Betty Lou Brown in 1963. They had two daughters, Julia and Cynthia. Betty passed away in 1999.

Dale had a quick mind and great sense of humor. He enjoyed all types of comedy, from Abbott and Costello to Monty Python and the Pink Panther. He also had strong political views, which fortunately were shared by his immediate family. One of Dale's recent highlights was voting in the 2012 presidential election.

After retiring, Dale enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe to include France, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. He also visited Bali, Malaysia, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Cancun, Mexico, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during Carnival. Additionally, he made several extended visits to China to see his fiancée, Jinghan Li. They were united in marriage Nov. 24, 2007, and resided in San Antonio.

Dale was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2011. He was provided impeccable care by Dr. Roger Lyons.
Dale is survived by his loving wife, Jinghan Schissler; his daughters, Julia Ellen Smith and her husband, Dwaine, of Floresville and Cynthia Anne Baute and her husband, John, of Blacksburg, Virginia; his two grandsons, Austin and Andrew Smith; and a brother, Dr. Lloyd Robert Schissler of Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts.
