It was always nice to see Mario's smile when the Indy came in and I was there with Mark or Paul. I truly enjoyed talking to Mario. We never talked hockey only fishing. I remember how concerned he was when his son was injured in an accident. Mario was sincere gentleman, family man and always there to look after his customers and especially his workers.
Mario, no long on the dock you'll be seen, however, I am sure you are with St. Peter, giving him tips on filling his fish holes. God Bless you Mario and RIP my friend!

We just got back in town-saw the UT and are sorry we missed the chance to convey our sincere condolences in person.I've know Mario for over 50 years. He always greeted me with "Doctor Biondo", even though I was the son,and reminded me that my name was on his birth certificate-My father delivered Mario.Mario was a uniquely wonderful guy and I will think about him and miss him every time I return to Fisherman's Landing from one of my long range fishing trips. All our best to his family.

Dear Mario,
you may be gone, but I'll never forget your radiant smile, friendly wit and sense of humor. You were the most welcome customer at Southwest cargo, easy to please and be around with. What started as just a business relationship, grew into friendship. I'll always smile when thinking of you. Rest in peace my good friend.

Mario has been a great friend of mine for the past 40 years. It is a real loss to his family, friends and the fishing community he has helped and has shared his laughter and great food and drink with...we will all miss him dearly. It is too bad that wonderful giving and honest and friendly person like Mario had to go so soon... "Go with God" my good friend..

One of the most familiar faces at the long range docks will no longer be seen. Mario Ghio, owner of Sportsman's Seafood on Quivira Road in San Diego, has passed. Word spread quickly among those who knew Mario, and there were many who thought well of the family man who could be found behind his little stand on any day, no matter the weather or the early hour, when a long ranger or a dayboat with a good catch arrived to unload fish and passengers.
Mario always was at the landing when my son and I returned from long range trips, and Mario always remembered our names, and processed 100s of fish we caught over the past 15 years. When my wife would pickup our fish he would greet her with a hug and kiss!
What a big loss to the San Diego Fishing world, and of course to his beloved Family.

Mario, I still can't believe you are gone.. Glad I got to say bye, my hope is you heard my voice. I will forever cherish memories at Sportsmens working there, helping you get organized and send packages, and my surprise visits to say hi. You were my cheerleader, always said I deserved better and oh so many more compliments. The hugs, special from you. You made an impact on so many lives, what an amazing accomplishment. Today I received our Christmas cards and it will be the first year not sending one to you. You kept all of them, asked about my doggies... You remembered everything, one of a kind. To Mia, Marisa, Mario, Jess, Bree, and all other family members, my heart goes out to you. He was proud of all of you, his family was so important to him. Love you guys. Rest in Peace Mario

I met Mario through a friend who went on long range fishing trips down in Baja. Both me and my friend worked at the time at the Nuke plant San Onofre. I went down to pic up fish and me being a large guy and a Italian who loves to eat. I hit it off with Mario he would sometimes be making a fish soup with Gods knows what all he put into it and offer me some. You never knew what might pop up on a spoonful a bunch of telesales from squid or a nice piece of fish. Whatever it was it was good. He told me of his fish camp down in Baja and wanted to buy my fith wheel trailer and bring it down there. He would say "Tony you will have your time share down there if you sell that trailer to me". He wanted it at a bargain price for this privilege. He was a great man and friend, I am proud to have known him. He will be missed by all who had the great privilege to have met him. Tony Tangorra

In the mid 50's when Mario used to live on Columbia St.I was always there playing with him.I remember a couple of times we go through his father's old clothes and dress in long overcoats and fedora's.We'd walk to India St. coats dragging on the sidewalks looking like a couple of midgets. We'd walk to the Roma Inn where Mario's uncle Cujo was the bartender, he give us 7up's with a bunch of cherries.I don't think anyone had a better friend or childhood.God bless and rest in peace.
