Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kane Funeral Home - Ridgefield on Oct. 28, 2025.
On Saturday, October 25, 2025, David Ghio, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away suddenly at the age of 61.
Born on March 7, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, David spent most of his life in Connecticut, where he graduated from New Fairfield High School in 1982, and went on to earn a degree in Construction Management from Central Connecticut State University. He built a long and respected career in construction management throughout Western Connecticut, a fitting profession for someone who loved creating and fixing things with his own hands.
In 1989, David married Mary Ellen (Salom) Ghio, and together they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and family. Their daughter, Serina, was the light of his life, his pride and joy. Those who knew David will remember his fierce protectiveness of his family and the unmistakable twinkle in his eye when he spoke of his grandson, Nico David Amelio. Watching Serina marry her husband, Darren Amelio, and later becoming "Pop" to Nico, were among his proudest moments.
David was independent, some might say stubborn, but his heart was steadfast and loyal. He cared deeply for his loved ones and never shied from hard work or responsibility, especially when it came to family. Along with Mary Ellen, he devoted years to caring for his mother in her later life.
A builder by trade and by nature, David could never sit still for long. He was happiest with a project, whether it was improving his home, tending his gardens, or tinkering with something just to make it better.
David loved golf and fishing, but perhaps nothing brought him more comfort than his loyal pets. A devoted dog lover, he shared his life with many beloved canine companions - Sam, Tootsie, Stinky, and Amos.
A wonderful cook, David had a soft spot for family dinners, and often would sneak a taste of the Sunday gravy before it was done, a small act that summed up his playful, down-to-earth spirit. A former high school football player, David carried that same grit and teamwork through life: steady, strong, and dependable.
David is predeceased by his parents, Marie and Serge Ghio. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Salom Ghio; his daughter and son-in-law, Serina and Darren Amelio; and his grandson, Nico David Amelio. He also leaves behind his siblings and their spouses: Marina and Jim Maroney of Stroudsburg, PA; Serge Ghio and Anne Wennerstrand of Norwalk, CT; and Renato and Alicia Ghio of
Danbury, CT; his aunt, Madeleine Laraia of North Carolina; and his brothers-in-law and their families, including John and Laurie Salom, Andrew Salom, James and Susan Salom; as well as his many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 31, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Saint Mary Church; 26 Dodgingtown Road, Bethel. Interment will take place privately and there will be no calling hours.
