When you walked into my office
to meet me that day 15 years ago
I thought I knew who you were
I ran around the receptionist desk
and threw my arms around you
and you reciprocated with a slight stun on your face, but held me close hugging me back, just as much as I didn't want to let go...I stepped back and introduced you "Everyone this is "Brian my Father"...Everyone in the office of 9 years who knew me, couldn't wait to say hello., You just quietly assumed the position, and accepted the greetings from my co-workers...as, I was told by my manager, "MB, Don't worry about getting back from your visit and lunchtime, take all the time you need"....I was ALL SMILES...you opened the front office door for me as we walked out onto the sidewalk, the door closed behind us, you gently put your arm around me and said, "I'm not Brian, I'm your Uncle Ed his older brother, I know it is confusing as we have always been looked at in similarity as we look a lot alike, .....I fought back the tears, because I couldn't yet tell you both apart(and yes, you both look so much alike "Irish twins they say"...)
You walked with me slowly to the elegant Italian Restaurant on 11th Street "Old" Downtown (original early establishments" of Tracy, CA)...I was always referred to as Tracy from Tracy.....it was easy to remember my name....but not for me now...We slowly walked past all the Vintage Brick Buildings and came to the restaurant, it was perfect, we ate wonderful cuisine by a professional Italian chef, we enjoyed a beverage or two, and I sat and listened intensely to you begin t9 help me understand all of the Family "ENGLISH'S" we are everywhere and a huge family...I was used to a small family unit, this amazed me...you told me your history, I WAS GLUED TO YOUR EVERY WORD!", IRELAND families, Canadian families, Southern Cali family, Bay Area family, AZ family, who was who and their position in the "ENGLISH SIBLINGS" (my Aunties and Uncles", explained so much to me, that is made it so much easier to begin to know who I really was and who I came from by the way of the Great Grandparents to Mum and Dad ENGLISH(my grandparents who had passed), I held to everything as if I was walking down memory lane with you holding my hand so I didn't feel awkward or out of place...When I smiled and you saw the gap between my front teeth...you said..that's a family trait..I always wondered where that had come from,(I almost had a dentist put veneers to cover the gap in my front teeth, I was always made fun of ....all my elementary school friends called me "gappy", even my OWN two sisters made fun of my teeth...All of a sudden I was PROUD OF THE TRAIT ...and IT CAME TO BE WHAT I FELT CONNECTED TO INSTANTLY as a newly adopted biological ENGLISH MEMBER..You gave me this...a sense of belonging by telling me all the health issues that run in the Family, things I need to be aware of as I aged..and Well, just was so tender and loving to do this for me...I never told my coworker's the slight mix up, and they had no idea when "DAD BRIAN actually came through that same door, they just said "So good to see you again"...LOLOLOLOLOL.....This was our little secret, and I never had to be embarrassed by not knowing WHO WAS WHO again, because of YOU dear Uncle Ed...I never went back to work that day, they excused me so I could absorb all that just happened...
Over the years I got CHRISTMAS cards, and letters of the health issues you were battling and ALWAYS KEPT ME IN THE LOOP OF ENGLISH HAPPENINGS......I AM FOREVER GREATFUL UNCLE ED, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE VERY INFLUENTIAL AS I tell my tale's as Eloquently as you did about "OUR HUGE ENGLISH FAMILY".......UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN ON GOD'S CELESTIAL SHORE..I will tell of your unconditional love for little Ol' me........Tracy Elizabethann Marie St.John-English....AMEN

RIP WE (Ed) English. Mr E, I'll treasure the photos sent to me by your son and the special and fond memories I have of you from when we met working for you as Dept Head of Engineering at Cuesta College while also attending there and at Cal Poly SLO. You were a good friend to me and my family and the most decent and kind human being I have ever known. You encouraged and inspired me to find my passion and go back to school and work on my architecture degree. You helped make me the successful business woman I am today. I am forever grateful to you and your gentle coaching and mentoring. I will miss the many great stories you shared so easily of your 93 years on this earth. May you Rest In Peace with your beloved wife Audrey and find that racetrack in the heavens in which you may eternally tinker in and zip around in your old vintage cars!

Mr. English was a very nice and kind man. I met him when I worked at Cuesta College as security and a custodian. I locked his building as security and cleaned his office when I worked as a custodian. I knew him many years and he always told great
stories. I also was able to hear his intriguing stories at Cayucos at the Central Coast Vinage machinery, antique old engine shows every year. Furthermore, I was able to visit with him a bit at the monthly dinner at the native sons of the golden west. Truly, Mr. English was a kind, gentile man and he told very interesting stories about antique cars, antique radios, as well about the many interests in his life. I am glad I knew him
