Louis Tedone Obituary

Louis Tedone, MD
July 21, 1923 - January 10, 2021
San Luis Obispo, California - Louis Matthew Tedone, M.D. was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1923. He was the proud middle son of immigrants from Bari, Italy. His parents owned an Italian grocery store in Brooklyn where Lou learned the value of hard work.
He graduated from Brooklyn's Boys High School in 1941 as president of his senior class. In 2017 he was honored as Man of the Year by the Boys High Alumni Association.
He attended Fordham University. After only two years at Fordham, Lou was admitted to New York Medical College because the Navy needed doctors for World War II. The Navy paid all but $1000 of Lou's medical school training.
He graduated Medical college in 1947 at age 24, interned at St. Catherine Hospital for two years, and did his pediatric residency at St. Catherine's and Lutheran Hospital until 1951, both in Brooklyn.
In February 1949 he married our mother, Grace DePalo, another child of Italian immigrants. A honeymoon baby, Grace Cecelia (named after Lou's mother) was born in November. A year later came Bob.
Because of the Korean War, this time, it was the Army that needed doctors. Lou enlisted as an officer so he wouldn't be drafted as a private. He became the camp pediatrician at Camp Roberts from 1951 to 1953. He moved his family from Brooklyn to Atascadero. Bruce came along in 1953.
Lou realized that practicing pediatrics in San Luis Obispo (where it didn't snow and he could scoot around town quickly for house calls) was preferable to Brooklyn. Edison French hired him in 1953 to become the first pediatrician in San Luis County. Our family (then) of five moved to San Luis that year into the same house that Lou lived in the rest of his life. Six more children came along and builders kept adding bedrooms.
Lou worked for the French Clinic from 1953 to 1977, in solo practice until 1986, then with the Ekegren, Tedford, and Patterson Group for two more years. Upon his complete retirement he made mozzarella for his daughter's Shell Beach store, DePalo and Sons.
Besides seeing more than 30,000 children, Lou was an active community volunteer. His involvement included: founding committee member of the Mental Health Clinic and on the advisory board there for ten years, president for seven; member of the Mission High School and Old Mission Elementary school boards. He taught sex education at Mission for grades 5 - 9 (much to the embarrassment of his children); volunteer medical consultant at Chris Jespersen School Cerebral Palsy Clinic; founding member of Youth Football League and on its board; first torch carrier when the 2002 Olympic flame came to San Luis; awarded "Crown of Good Name" by Congregation Beth David in 1996; received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the San Luis Obispo Community Health Foundation. In addition, the French Hospital Medical Center Foundation established the Dr. Louis M. Tedone Humanitarian Award to be given annually to a deserving community member. Lou, of course, was the first recipient.
While Lou was busy with his practice and volunteerism, his beloved Grace held down the fort at home. We can still hear her say, "Louis Matthew!" when he would get out of line. Mom passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1994. Lou would water her favorite tree while having long talks with her after her death. He wore his wedding ring for the rest of his life.
He is predeceased by his parents Grace and Matteo, his brothers Frank and Nat, daughter Elissa, and wife Grace. He is survived by his children Gracie (Richard Manderscheid), Bob (Sheila), Bruce (Lee), Marisa (Kelly Teel), Matthew (Marianne), Andrea (Scott Williams), Joe (Kathy), Martin (Tracy), and Teresa (Tom Goossen); also twenty-two grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Hilty for his extraordinary care.
Lou wanted to end this obituary with this: "At the time of our passing if we measure success by the number of friends we leave, by the love of our family members, and the respect of our colleagues and community then I feel I have been successful."
Due to COVID no services are planned at this time.

Dr. Tedone was a kind, gentle soul who lovingly took care of our rambunctious son, giving us much wise advice; he is fondly remembered by the whole Swett family. Our prayers are with you!

Dr. Tedone was my pediatrician in the late 60s. He was the best doctor a kid could have.

While shopping at DePalo and Sons, I would run into him and he would remember me and ask “how’s your mom” I was surprised that he remembered me from over 50 years ago. He had a very good memory.

Dr. Tedone was a great doctor and will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Dr. Tedone and my late father, Billy Mounts, M.D., had very similar experiences. Both completed internships serving in the military then settled in San Luis Obispo county in the early 1950s. The comradeship, collegial sharing and respect continued for 65+ years, well into their 90s, as they carried on their relationship via email. Icon, legend and humanitarian are the proper words to describe Dr. Tedone.

Dr. Tedone was a once in a lifetime doctor. My parents would call at all hours and he was at our front door. The “balloon art” was classic. I remember him at Avila enjoying life. He made growing up in SLO such a positive.

Dear Bruce and family. What a wonderful dad and Doctor. Not only was he my doctor for many years he was a friend. Always a smile on his face and kindness in his eyes. I remember hanging out at your house during high school. Your mom and dad always had an open door policy and we did! Love to all your family.

Dr. Tedone took care of both our children almost 40 years ago. His kind, soft nature and informative style meant our children didn’t fear going to the doctor. We were blessed to have him as our doctor. His legacy will live on. Condolences to the family. May he Rest In Peace.

In 1977, I became the first child psychiatrist in San Luis Obispo County. Lou, the first pediatrician in the county, had by then helped usher in a cadre of excellent pediatricians, and they were all very welcoming to this newcomer. My wife, Mary Alice, still remembers Lou and Grace inviting us to their home as part of that welcoming process. Miss you Lou!

Dr Tedone was my pediatrician back in the 60's and got me through the ruff and tumble years of a boys life. I always remember my Mom saying as we left his office, "Now did you listen to what Dr Tedone said?"
He became a legend in San Luis for his service to its children like me. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Lou brought the daily bank deposits from his daughter’s deli to First Bank where I was a teller for many years. One day I asked if he would bring in some fresh mozzarella for me to try. It was so good, soon everybody wanted to “order” some, so we started a weekly cheese list, and he would bring us the fresh mozzi every Friday. I nicknamed him “Dr Cheese”. We sure kept him busy, and I can still taste that cheese!
We both had the sad experience of losing a family member to aggressive cancer just months apart. He lost Grace and I lost my young sister Debby, both in 1994. We had many conversations about loss, and even years later had a bond over this shared experience. I lost my own dear Dad in 2018. Both men were patriarchs of large families and left wonderful examples to be cherished. My love to all of you in this bittersweet journey.

Dr. Tedone was a memorable man. As our family's pediatrician, I still remember how he looked me straight in the eye, at eye level, unlike most adults. He knew how to connect with people, no matter what age. I always felt safe in his presence and believed wholeheartedly he would take good care of me. So memorable. Farewell, Doctor, you made an impact just by being you.

Lots of wonderful letters from patients. But let me represent the nurses. I worked beside him for most of my 40 year career. He was a wonderful, patient, loving mentor. A great doctor and a wonderful man. We were all so blessed to have him and his lovely family as part of our community. He will be greatly missed.

I met Dr Tedone first when I was 4 years old when he treated my bleeding nose. He cotterized it and told my parents not to worry. We were just visiting family in SLO. In 1972 we.moved to SLO and he became my favorite doctor. I always felt like I was the most important person when I had my appointments. Later in High School I met two of his children Matthew and Missy. They both treated me as a friend. He will surely be missed.

Dr. Tedone was part of the life saving measures taken when I was diagnosed with oral cancer at age 13. He referred me to a local oral surgeon and a month later the cancer was removed. Recently I saw him at his place of worship and thanked him for "saving my life". His reply was to point to the heavens and said " God is the healer". Dr. Tedone,
you have been successful indeed.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr Tedones passing
He was my Dr for many years here in SLO while I was growing up.
Lots of memories of Dr Tedone and Dr Eckergren at the old French Clinic on Marsh St and later on the corner of Santa Rosa and Marsh St.
They use to see each other's patients if one was busy or out of town.
My condolences to the family

The word “ Icon” is sometimes overused and sometimes given to someone who may not be entirely deserving but, in Lou’s case, no one is more deserving. RIP Dr. Tedone.
