Michelle Olmsted Obituary

DR. MICHELLE (WEBSTER) OLMSTEAD Dr. Michelle (Webster) Olmsted (46), a well-known Albuquerque pediatrician, died suddenly of natural causes on March 16. She was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1963 to Dave and Georgette Olmsted. She attended Acequia Madre Elementary, Santa Fe Prep, the Albuquerque Academy, and Santa Fe High School. Fluent in French, she spent one year as an exchange student at Brillantmont International School in Switzerland. She graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and completed medical school at the University of New Mexico. As a medical student, she developed a keen interest in children's health and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of New Mexico serving her final year as chief resident. After residency, she joined the UNM faculty as an attending physician. While at UNM, she became strongly interested in endocrinology and treated pediatric diabetic patients during outreach clinics in under-served communities all around the state. She subsequently served as the clinical director of the Los Lunas clinic of First Choice Community Healthcare. She recently entered into private practice as a Board-certified pediatrician with Southwest Medical Associates serving the west side community. Michelle's desire to improve her community was reflected in her many activities. She was a tireless advocate for her patients. Local media interviewed her regarding diabetes and children's health. She was a long-time board member of the local branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). She was selected to serve on the JDRF's national research review board, where she served for the last six years helping to guide millions of dollars of research funding dedicated to eradicating this terrible disease. Michelle was particularly interested in animal welfare and was a long-term volunteer at the Watermelon Mountain Ranch rescue group with a strong interest in cats. Michelle had a vibrant personality and enjoyed amateur theater, working both behind and on-stage, primarily at the Albuquerque Little Theater. She loved travel and particularly enjoyed diving in Hawaii and traveling in Europe with her long-time partner, Michael Vannoni. She is preceded in death by her brother, Gregory, and both her parents. She is survived by siblings: John and Anick Olmsted of Albuquerque, and Brian Nelson of Austin, TX. She had many friends among her patients and colleagues. The nighttime sky in Albuquerque will shine a little less brightly with her passing. The JDRF will be establishing a special research award in her honor. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: JDRF Diabetes Research Foundation International 2501 San Pedro Drive NE # 116 Albuquerque, NM 87110. Memorial Service to be held Saturday, March 27, 1 pm at Calvary of Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna Road NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Any questions can be directed to Anick (505)717-1074.

I'm so sad to hear of Michelle Olmsted's death. Dr. Olmsted treated our daughter Kiyomi when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1999. I don't know how we would have gotten through those first days without Dr. Olmsted's care. She was wonderful--beyond any description I can give here. Thanks to Dr. Olmsted, Kiyomi has been healthy and in good control of her blood sugars--and life. Our family is in debt to Dr. Olmsted for her medical expertise as well as her human kindness. She will be missed and remembered fondly.

I just found out this terrible news this morning. I am so heartbroken to hear of Michelle's passing. She was so much more than a doctor to our 3 kids- since 2005. In 2006 our son was diagnosed by 3 doctors with a stomach flu. But when we came with our daughter for a routine checkup, Michelle took one look at our son and told us to take him IMMEDIATELY to UNM as he had a ruptured appendix. I know without a doubt she saved his life that day. She will be sorely missed, we will never forget her, and will be hard pressed to ever find another doctor like her! Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

My 4 year old has been a paitent of Dr Olmsted's since April of 2007. I credit her keen eye and concern for every paitent for diagnosing my daughter with Cystic Fibrosis, which enabled us to get her the care she needed to thrive and stay healthy.
Her passing leaves a huge hole in my families life.

Dr. Olmsted was my son's pediatrician from his birth, almost 3 years. She was great with him and he always responded to her even when sick. I am saddened that she has left us way too soon. We will miss her.

I will treasure the last three years we spent with Dr. Olmsted as our pediatrician. She was so kind, always listened, and was so good with my two children (ages 2 &3). It breaks my heart that she will no longer be with us, definitely gone too soon. Praying for her family and friends in this time of loss. Jennifer K and Family

Dr. Olmstead will forever be in my heart and memories. She had been my daughter's pediatrician for 3 years. She was the only doctor that my daughter would allow to look in her ears without a complete meltdown after having tubes put in. Dr. Olmstead was gentle, kind, and always got down to the level of her patient to relate. I vividly remember her reading my daughter a Dr. Seuss story and going into character to make my daughter laugh and forget why she was there. She would also sing the Tigger song which was always good for a belly-felt laugh. She will be missed by many, but remembered always.
