Rose Martinez Obituary

ROSA ORTIZ MARTINEZ Was born to Ursulo and Anita V. Ortiz in Chimayo on February 4, 1913. She passed into eternal life on April 24, 2010. She left us in the same quiet peaceful manner that she lived her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel A. Martinez Sr.; sisters, Lugarda Gallegos, Emma Zamora; a brother, Willie V. Ortiz and a daughter-in-law, Julie Martinez. She is survived by her two sons: Manuel A. Martinez, Jr. and Donald P. Martinez (Geri); four grandchildren: Patrick Martinez (Grecia), Tony Martinez (Angie), David and Leah Martinez; one great granddaughter, Juliana Rose Martinez; and one brother, Ursulo V. Ortiz (Carlotta); and numerous other nieces and nephews. Rose attended Loretta Academy through grade school. She graduated high school at the Spanish American Normal School at El Rito. Rose received her BA from Highlands University and embarked on a long and much loved career as an Elementary Teacher. After 12 years at Tesuque Elementary, Rose transferred to Kearny Elementary for another 15 years. In retirement Rose became "home sick" for the students. She told her family that she felt like getting on a school bus that passed her home. At this point she became a very popular substitute teacher for another 10 years. Her interest included international travel, delighting her family and friends with fantastic northern New Mexico foods, gardening and preserving the fruits and vegetables from her garden's yield. For many years she enjoyed being a Eucharistic Minister and a member of The Catholic Daughters at St. Anne's Church. Later she made many friends as a member of the St. Francis Cathedral Altar Society. Rose was a 50 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Honor Society. She frequently mentioned that she experienced a very fulfilled life. She commented on how happy she was during her 3 years living Ponce de Leon Assisted Living. The family is appreciative to the Assisted Living staff. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Carmelite Monastery, 49 Mount Carmel Road or Mass Offerings for Rose. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, 6 p.m. where a rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 30, 2010, 12 p.m. at St. Francis Cathedral. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe, NM 87505 (505)984-8600

To the Family of Mrs. Martinez:
My thoughts and prayers go out to your family as I remember this most amazing woman. Mrs. Martinez was my 1st grade teacher at Kearny Elementary School and as years passed I always kept her close to my heart because of the sweet, caring woman I knew her to be. She always made me feel secure as I transitioned from my Mom to school and for that I am forever grateful. I had the pleasure of seeing Mrs. Martinez a few years back at Albertsons grocery store at DeVargas Mall and of course older but always so beautifully made up and as pleasant as I remember her that 1st day I walked through her classroom door at Kearny Elementary. I told her who I was and we chatted a bit, my heart just melting at the wonderful lady before me who I wished could have been my teacher throughout my student years at Kearny Elementary.

May God Bless You all as you cherish the memories of the Special Lady we all had the honor to know.

Manuel and Donny, so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Just heard from Chapo. Great memories of your Mom. She was very patient and good when I was invited to spent a night with you at your house. I'm sure she will be missed greatly. Will talk to you soon

My deepest condolences to the Martinez family. I have always had warm, wonderful memories of Mrs. Martinez. She was my first grade teacher at Kearny in 1970. It was a tough transition away from mom. Mrs. Martinez was my mom away from home that year. I have never forgotten her kindness or teachings. You will always be in my heart.

Dear Martinez family,
I am deeply saddened to hear about your loss. I was a student of Mrs. Martinez in 1969 @ Kearny Elementary School. Throughout my years in various schools, (DeVargas Jr. High, Santa Fe High, New Mexico State, University of NM, Highlands University & San Diego State), Mrs. Martinez was ALWAYS my favorite teacher! She provided such a wonderful foundation for my education! I will always remember her & she'll be in a special place in my heart. May the angels take such good care of Mrs. Martinez, a sweet, loving & amazing woman.
