CELIA RUMSEY Obituary

CELIA D. RUMSEY A woman of substance passed quietly from this earth on Sunday, March 11th, 2012. Artist, scholar, philanthropist, boon companion Celia D. Rumsey entered the world on November 2, 1944 and spent the next several decades of her life ensuring that art in all forms was embraced. The art of love, giving, loyalty and depth were her inspiration and installation. The daughter of Charles Cary Rumsey Jr. and Mary Maloney, Celia was as proud of her family legacy as we were of her accomplishments. The granddaughter of Charles Cary Rumsey, the noted sculptor and polo player, and Mary Harriman Rumsey, sister to Governor Averill Harriman of New York, Celia was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and a Fulbright Scholar. Her early years in Sands Point, New York and final years in Santa Fe, New Mexico encased an "in between" of wonder, survival and extraordinary love. The work and contribution of her life was her unique vision of the world. Her renowned art installation, Chronic spoke to the pain, fear and ultimate endurance of someone living with a chronic illness. Craving followed setting the stage for a humorous yet searing voyeuristic view into America's obsession with food. Celia's final work, Cash, a work in progress, brought her full circle, the trappings of birthright yielding to the ultimate triumph that you can't take it with you. Celia is survived by her brother Charles C. Rumsey Jr., and two nieces of her deceased brother Peter; Celia C. Rumsey and Alita Rumsey Kavalauskas, her two, beloved canine companions, Roger and Moira, and devoted tribe of friends in awe. Arrangements have been made by Berardinelli Funeral Service, Santa Fe, New Mexico. A memorial service will be announced at a future date. Donations in Celia's memory may be made to the Center for Contemporary Art, 1050 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fe, NM 87505. We think of you, Roger, and Moira every time we walk in the arroyo near St. John's College. You always had interesting thoughts on art, travel, and family. Regrets that we never got together for that tea that we always spoke of. You will always be remembered.

I am saddened to learn today of Celia's passing. I was happy to meet her in 1987 when she came to Buffalo, NY for a gala celebration of our renovated museum galleries. I admired her drive to express her experiences through her sculpture and installations. I offer my condolences to her family and friends.

We as a town and community of people in the arts have lost a wonderful fellow artist. Celia Rumsey was a very good friend as both an artist and a diabetic. She gave me many hours of advice about the good doctors and the bad and the need to use a insulin pump. We met weekly at SFCC for the past nine years. I will miss her presence and conversations. I will always miss Celia.

"A woman of substance" ... words so true of Celia that I think even she would appreciate them. Kudos to the friend who penned Celia's obituary.

We who are left behind knew Celia as a wonderful spirit deeply committed both to her own creative expression and to ensuring that others had the opportunity to do the same.

Safe passage, Celia.

Many condolences to the family. Celia was indeed a passionate supporter and creator of art. Her art expression was completely unique and engaging for the viewer. As a philanthropist, she supported many important non-profit arts organizations. We all benefited from her charitable contributions. Thank you Celia for the gifts you have given to us all. Sending love and peace, Karla Winterowd
