Jean-Marie Crocker Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Jean-Marie Jensen Crocker, a long-time resident of Saratoga Springs, NY, died peacefully Monday, February 10, 2020 at her home, surrounded by those she loved.Born March 8, 1923 in Winston-Salem North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Helene (Sweney) Jensen. She attended schools in Swampscott, Massachusetts and graduated from the School of English at Simmons College in Boston in 1944. After graduation she worked in a publicity firm that handled institutional and charitable accounts. She married Denton Winslow Crocker on February 23, 1946 upon his return from service in the Pacific during WWII. They moved to Ithaca while he studied for his doctoral degree at Cornell University and during this time their first two children were born. They also lived in Amherst, Massachusetts and later in Waterville, Maine where two more children were born. In 1960 she moved to Saratoga Springs when her husband assumed the position of chair of the Biology Department at Skidmore College. As a writer Jean-Marie authored poetry, essays and short stories which were published in literary magazines and newspapers. She also wrote a full-length book, “Son of the Cold War”, a combined historical account of the era and memoir of the life of their son, Denton Winslow Crocker, Jr., who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1966. The memoir was an integral part of the research done for the documentary, “The Vietnam War”, by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick of Florentine Films. Being a Gold Star mother, she also participated as an interviewee in the documentary which was released in 2017.Jean-Marie had many interests, in particular literature, history, music and art. She was a knowledgeable gardener and shared with her husband a love of the natural world. She found pleasure in cooking and sharing meals with friends and family. One of her fondest pastimes was her regular get-togethers with her very dear friends at their Craft Group over the past fifty year.A devoted mother to her four children, she was active in the pursuits they followed, especially church, Scout work and school activities. In the 1970’s with her husband she was one of the founders of the ecumenical volunteer organization FISH, that for several years provided a variety of social services for the community. She was a member of Bethesda Episcopal Church for 60 years and also was a member of the Saratoga Springs Historical Society, Saratoga County Council of the Arts and SPAC.Her greatest joy was in the love of her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her son, Denton Winslow, Jr, she was predeceased by Denton, her husband of 66 years, her parents and her brother The Reverend Andrew Jensen. She is survived by a daughter, Carol H. Crocker of Niskayuna, a son Randy Crocker (Michael Whitton) of Greenfield, and a daughter Candace J. Warren (George) of Bethel, CT; as well as three grandchildren, Tessa M. Berryman of Niskayuna, Daniel C. Warren and Jacob A. Warren of Bethel, CT and three great grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Lura Ann Jensen of White Bear Lake, MN, a niece Helene Grabow of Baltimore, MD and a nephew, Daniel Jensen of Denver, CO.The family wishes to express gratitude to the women at Home Instead who gave our mother kind assistance, and exceptional compassion over the last few years. In particular we thank Judy Walden who was a devoted and caring aid for six years. There will be a service of Holy Communion held at Bethesda Episcopal Church at 11:30am on Saturday, February 22, 2020. Calling hours will be held on Friday (Feb. 21) from 5 to 7om at the Burke/Bussing Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Thank you for sharing Mogie’s and your family’s story in Ken Burns’ Vietnam documentary. I was not born until after the Vietnam War so you very much helped me understand the War’s real life impact on family during those times.

I wish to say that on the two year anniversary of her death she has been ever with me and I treasure so much about her esteemed qualities that have been said many times over. One special thing that I treasure and have kept, however, is a birthday card that Randy said was the last thing she ever wrote when she so graciously signed it with her shaking hand saying "and much love to my dear sister-in-law." We were each from a boy/girl family and quickly became the sisters we never had. The card which someone picked for her read "I love how we've grown closer over the years...how we're there for each other for everything from laughter to tears. I love how you can be you and I can be me...and together we're family."
That sums up our relationship and the love we shared. She leaves a vacancy that no one else could possibly fill.

I saw the film The Vietnam War recently. The interviews of Mrs. Crocker were one of the most touching thing in this documentary film. Her devouted love and suffering for her son Mogie was very impressive. This special lady is a model for all mothers in the world. Now Mrs. Crocker is with her beloved son. My deepest condolences for her family from Bucharest, Romania.

To the entire Crocker family. My sorrow is deep at this time. Thank you Randy for calling me today sad news . Your Mom and I had great phone conversations for about 2 years. I really enjoyed talking to her. Denton and I were only 16 days apart in birth. I always called her on her Birthday but we could not connect this year. What a wonderful Lady in all respects. God be with you all at this time. CAROLE when you can call me at 1-609-5137879 if you wish.

I am a stranger to Mrs. Crocker and her family who stumbled upon this obituary having done some online research. I was saddened to read of her recent passing. As her family undoubtedly hears often from many others I was extremely moved by Jean-Marie's (and daughter Carol's) contributions the Vietnam War documentary which my wife & I have just finished re-watching in its entirely. From what I've witnessed in the documentary, online articles, and the write-up & comments from this page it seems obvious Jean-Marie was a wonderful & accomplished woman who lived a long dignified life. I honor her sacrifice as a Gold Star mother and pray that "Mogie", Denton Sr. and other loved ones who preceded her passing may be reconnected in the afterlife.

It's been a few weeks now but I offer my sincerest condolences to her family in their period of grief. She appears to have left a wonderful legacy and I look forward to finding & reading some of her literature/poetry...May God be with her and the extended Crocker family!

The Crockers embodied for me the present elegance of Saratoga-
in their demeanor, in their kindness and consideration for the other, in their interest and care for the world. I value the memory of sitting across from them at some fundraiser or other. They were always the most elegant and eloquent people in the room.

Though sisters-in-law by definition, we were more nearly the sisters that neither of us had. Although she was 17 years my senior, it never seemed that way. She welcomed me so completely into the family that I always felt an equal even while absolutely admiring and adoring her. But it was not only her graciousness and many gifts that I apppreciated, I was completely smitten by her sharp wit and great sense of humor.

I think anyone who knew her well would say the same.

To Carol and family, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. When I was at your house, she always had a welcoming smile and was very kind to me. I remember how much fun we always had and so much laughing! Do you remember looking at the baby birds in the nest on our front porch? I hope the loving memories you have of her and knowing she is with your Dad and Denton will help you through this very sad time.

Jean-Marie Crocker. What a gracious and delightful lady! I will miss her sweet smile and gentle spirit. In caring for her these past few years, I noticed that she kept a copy of the Book of Common Prayer by her bedside. When I offered to read familiar passages of scripture and pray with her, she would close her eyes, listen quietly, and thank me. It was a privilege to serve this lovely woman of faith.

Jean-Marie was a most gracious lady, always a delight to be with. I will miss her sweet smile and positive outlook on life. I noticed that she kept her Book of Common Prayer by her bedside. She must have found comfort in reading it. When I offered to read scripture to her and pray, she would often close her eyes and listen to the familiar passages. It was a privilege for me to serve this lovely woman of faith.

Jean Marie Crocker was a woman of exceptional wet and loveliness. She welcomed me into her family after I married her daughter Carole. It is with great regret that I did not get to see Jean Marie in the final years of her life. Her bravery in the can Burns documentary as well as the bravery of her daughter and sharing their thoughts and feelings is remarkable. I wish everybody in the family the very best. Damon Berryman

So sad today. But I remember my first visit to The Wild Center in Tupper Lake where I ran into Denton and Jean-Marie. One if his former Skidmore students was the force behind this wonderful place in the Adirondacks.
Science, poetry! How wonderfully rich their lives were.
