James Warren Tupper M.D.

James Tupper Obituary

James Warren TUPPER, M.D. 4/20/1928 ~ 12/27/2011 James Warren Tupper, M.D., born April 20, 1928 in Billings, Montana, died in Seattle December 27, 2011 of complications following open-heart surgery. A strong, athletic man who thrived despite numerous accidents and injuries, Jim fought optimistically to recover from cardiac surgery with the same determination that characterized his approach to every other challenge life presented. He died peacefully, generously sharing his love with others to the end. Jim moved to Seattle with his parents, Warren Ernest and Ada Frances Tupper, at age two. He loved Seattle and spent his childhood playing in vacant lots behind Seattle Pacific University, skiing, and boating in the San Juans. An outstanding student, he played football and tennis at Queen Anne High School. Jim studied pre-medicine at the University of Washington (for which he retained a lifelong affection); he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, rowed three years on varsity crew, and met Sylvia Marie Nilsen, whom he married on June 6, 1953. Following his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1953, he completed an internship at the University of Michigan and residency in orthopedics at the University of Washington. He served as a navy physician during the Korean War, both in the Pacific and stationed at Bremerton. Jim trained in Texas with the renowned spine surgery pioneer, Paul Harrington; following this personal mentorship, he returned to Seattle and specialized in scoliosis treatment and research, along with general spine and neck surgery. Hired by orthopedic surgeons Forest Flashman and John Stewart, Jim helped establish the Seattle practice that became Orthopedic Physician Associates. A successful surgeon and compassionate physician, Jim was president of the Scoliosis Research Society and respected internationally as a lecturer and teacher. Jim and Sylvia became the parents of five fortunate children. While medicine fascinated Jim, he was always most committed to his family, with whom he skied, waterskied, hiked, jogged, rowed, boated, sang, and engaged in a plethora of work projects. An avid athlete and outdoorsman, he was a founder of Skiers Inc. at Crystal Mountain and a member of the Ancient Skiers. He loved construction and crafting furniture and other wood-based objects. In collaboration with a contractor friend, he built the family home in Laurelhurst and much of a vacation home on Lake Goodwin. Following his retirement from medicine in 1986, he was continually engaged in projects for others, and especially enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to use a chain saw and split wood. A committed member of University Congregational Church, Jim valued "honesty and integrity" above all else in human relations. Jim is survived by his wife Sylvia; children Brad, Christy, Kari, and Kathie; grandchildren Haley, Hillary, Helaina, Seth, Luke, Kaelyn, Lauren, William Seth, Anna, James, Shannon, and Kyle; and great grandchildren Josiah, Peter, and Devin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Margaret and Tom, and his son Carl. A service celebrating Jim's life will be held at University Congregational Church (4515 16th Ave NE, Seattle) on January 7th at 1 pm. Please wear bright clothing to the service in honor of Jim's vitality and love of color! In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the University of Washington College of Arts and Sciences, Planned Parenthood, or a charity of your choice.

My Mom and Dad gave me the Seattle Times obituary for Dr. Tupper last night. I read it, looked at the picture, and thought of the many years of doctor appointments I had with him as a child with scoliosis. He was always kind, upbeat and had a wonderful smile - helping me get through those challenging years. I so appreciate all he did for me and am so thankful he was my doctor. I send my condolences to his family. Bless you, Dr. Tupper!

Jim, you were always a friend to me and one of my surrogate Dads, when my own father passed away in 2004. I will remember all of our conversations warmly and I always smile when i think of you. You had a zest for Life that was contagious. God Bless you and Sylvia. Peace.

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Tupper's passing. I was one of his scoliosis patients 36 years ago, he saved my life. I still remember his great smile and voice. Dr. Tupper was actually one of the doctors in my childhood I actually looked forward to seeing. He was not only a great doctor but a truly gentle, compassionate man helping me and my mom during those three difficult years. I often think about him and proudly carry his wonderful work with me every day. My condolences to the Tupper family.

Dr. Tupper is very special to many of us who had Scoliosis. Roughly 40 years ago my life was forever changed by his work. His warm smile and positive outlook contributed greatly to my recovery. Whenever I eat an apple or see my school pictures from that time, I recall him...and carry a constant reminder of him.

I met Jim when I became friends with his daughter Kathie in high school. He and Sylvia always welcomed me into their home and allowed me to share a lot of time with their family during an important time in my life. He was also a great deal of support to my Mom JoAnn. I have such fond memories of the annual Christmas caroling party, "singing" with Kenai in the old blue station wagon on the way to the lake, and many others. I cherish the wooden salad bowl that Jim made for Mark and I as a wedding gift. I am saddened by his loss, but so thankful that he was a part of my life. My condolences go out to the entire Tupper family during this sad time.

Written words can't adequately capture how much Jim Tupper has meant to me. As a son-in-law, I had a second father in Jim. He was a source of constant encouragement, a model of independence, and a mentor in many matters ranging from family relationships to finishing turns on the slopes of Crystal Mountain. Jim (and his dear wife Sylvia) welcomed me and my two children into their family as their own. We will forever be grateful for the warmth and support they extended to us just as they extended it to nearly everyone they met and those for whom Jim cared as a physician. We will miss him immensely.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jim for one year. I first met Jim at a Christmas party last year. Jim immediately accepted me and we energetically sang Christmas carols together from the same page. Jim always showed interest in me and as I learned in great depth he similarly showed interest in and compassion toward all others that he was in contact with. Although he has physically left us, he will continue to live on in our memories and in all of his contributions to those that he engaged.
