Douglas Robert Sandland

Born in Seattle, Washington May 22, 1930, our gifted artist Doug passed away peacefully at St. John's Hospice March 17, 2015 in Vancouver BC. Predeceased by his parents Virgo and Vera Sandland and step-father Bob Woodman. Doug is survived by his sister Dorine (Jim) McCall, nieces Denice and Lisa, step-brother Robert Woodman, his former wife Grace Payne and their children Teri Brown and Darcel Sandland, four grandchildren Jennifer, Brandon, Brianne and Shaelynn, four great grandchildren Kelsey, Tyson, Colton and Coby as well as former wife Trudy Sandland and her son Nathan. Creativity and humor was Doug's life. He studied at Burnley School of Art, in Seattle; and Art Center, in Pasadena, CA. He was an art director for 40 years with major ad agencies in Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver, BC. He was a gifted watercolor artist who was a lifetime member of the Puget Sound Group of NW Painters for 53 years. In later years, he produced paintings, illustrations for books, and large portrait pencil commissions.

A Celebration of Doug's life will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Mountain View Cemetery Celebration Hall, 5455 Fraser Street, in Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jean Barber Cancer Society Lodge, 575 West 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC.

I inherited one of Doug's paintings after my dad died. I knew nothing about the artist but had always loved the cool serenity of this lovely watercolour. Imagine my surprise when I looked up the artist to-day and learned that he had worked for McKim Advertising in Vancouver as an art director (I presume). My Dad (Hal Roach) was President of McKim's and obviously very impressed with Doug's talent...which is why he bought the painting. I'm impressed too and so pleased I possess an original Sandland which is even more special because of the family connection. So sorry to hear he recently passed away. How wonderful that he will live forever through his art. Anne (Roach) Saso.

I first met Doug in 1979 when I joined McKim Advertising. I had just emigrated to Canada and he immediately took me under his wing. He bought me my first "table full of draft" at the Georgia Hotel and my wife Jill and I socialized a lot with him and Trudi. He was a truly nice man and, of course, very talented. We still have one of his paintings in our home. Our sincerest condolences go out to all his family. Steve & Jill Brook

I have just learned that you passed....and am heart broken. For a short time at Norman Lowe advertising I worked there and got to know him and met Trudy also. Just about 2 years ago I re-connected with him and we spoke briefly. Doug was a patient and charismatic man whose art inspired me. So my sincere condolences goes to Trudy and all of Doug's extended family. From Joan the one who bought the round oak coffee table!
