Stephen Duzan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Messinger Mortuaries- Indian School Mortuary on Mar. 18, 2026.
Stephen "Steve" Duzan, a visionary entrepreneur and loving husband, dad, and granddad, passed away on March 13, 2026 at the age of 84. Steve died surrounded by his family following complications from pneumonia.

Professionally, Steve will be remembered as the founding CEO of Seattle-based Immunex Corporation, growing it from a scrappy startup into a powerhouse that eventually developed Enbrel, a breakthrough drug that changed the lives of millions suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Even as his professional achievements grew, he remained committed to paying it forward. He was a strong mentor to the next generation of founders and entrepreneurs, leaving a lasting impact on their lives and careers and helping to cement Seattle as a center of innovation.

He will be remembered by family and friends for a much wider legacy. A great friend and a true gentleman, he carried himself with both warmth and conviction, leaving lasting impressions on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Golf was one of the great passions of his life. He loved the game as much for the company as the competition, playing some of his best rounds with lifelong friends he met in junior high and carried with him through Franklin High School, the University of Washington, and beyond.

While his adult life in Seattle often led people to mistake Steve for a city slicker, he developed his work ethic and love of gardening over years working on his family's Dry Creek Ranch in Prineville, Oregon. The vegetables he grew on San Juan Island and in Carefree inspired envy among all who had the pleasure of tasting his tomatoes and prize-winning Walla Walla sweet onions.

Steve will also be remembered for commemorating milestones by writing some of the best letters, poems, parables, and prayers any of us could hope to receive on a birthday or at Christmas. We wish we had him here to write this one.

He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; his daughters, Libby Nuttall (Key) and Lisa Crisera (Jim); and a gaggle of grandkids – Aidan, Conor, and Keegan Nuttall, and Maddy and Jack Crisera – none of whom ever managed to beat him in a round of golf.

Steve was a man knew what he wanted, and a memorial service was not one of those things, so we are honoring his wishes. In lieu of flowers, please honor Steve's legacy by making donations to the Foothills Caring Corps.
