He knew everything about Seattle. You’d be driving around and see something interesting and he could tell you all about it. Incredible artist! My favorite story was the one about the time his mom shot a rabbit with a revolver. I think there was a photo to go with that.

We were sorry to hear of Hewitt's passing. Our family has known the Jacksons for many years having grown up in Bellevue.
We are all fortunate to have several original pictures that Hewitt drew, also a set of 4 color prints.
During a trip returning from Washington to California I had a chance to stop at the Maratime Museum in Astoria, Or. and saw pictures he had on display.
During trips to Washington we would visit Hewitt and enjoyed the many stories he told.

I met Hewitt several times years ago while he was visiting Phoebe, and I was the travelling veterinarian there to take care of Phoebe's cats. I live on the Eastside, and several times our conversations turned to Marymoor Park- the off-leash dog park I've gone to for over twenty years, and so I learned of Hewitt's connection with the Clise's, and the property that became Marymoor Park. When Hewitt and Phoebe married, I also took care of Hewitt's cats. I feel privileged to have seen the many pieces of his art adorning the walls, and recognized him on the PBS TV special a few years ago. He was a man of such talent, and I just loved his incredibly beautiful glimmering white hair.

In 1954 my dad purchased a small 6x8 ink sketch of a square rigger. It was $8.50 and utterly simple and beautiful; H Jackson 1954 is neatly written in the lower right corner. The matting has gone yellow and the painted frame shows the nicks and dents of packing and re-packing.

The boat is on a open stretch of ocean with enormous cotton ball clouds behind it, throwing the rigging into sharp silhouette. Your dad noted on the back that the ship was in the process of shortening sail after a long trading voyage.

From my earliest memory of it (I was born in '53) until now, that picture has transported me to the open ocean where I can hear the cry of gulls, smell the kelp and saltyness of the water, and feel my dory gently bobbing in the swell.

For fifty years your father's drawing was a touchstone for me as we moved from house to house. It always hung in the entry.

My father passed away just a few months ago. Last Sunday my mom brought over the picture your dad drew so many years ago and gave it to me, her eyes moist with rememberance. It now hangs in our entry. And I can feel a fresh breeze and hear the lapping water when I look at it.

Your father's picture was and is and will be a blessing to my family. I hope this little story will temper your sorrow.

Dad always had a story to tell about the people he met and the things that he did. It was usually well embellished and quite humorous. I am sure that many people have stories to tell about him and we are hoping that you will share them with us.
