Marilyn Steinau Obituary
Marilyn C. Steinau Sept. 1, 1927-Jan. 19, 2012 Marilyn C. Steinau, a native of San Francisco and longtime resident of Belvedere, passed away peacefully at Marin General Hospital on Thursday, January 19, 2012, surrounded by her sons, grandchildren and friends. She was the daughter of Martin and Frederica Coleman. In 1950, she married Allan Steinau and, after a six month tour of Europe, they settled in a little Ark on the Belvedere Lagoon until their house was built. Mr. Steinau was a member of the City Council, Mayor of Belvedere and President of the Landmark Society. He preceded his wife in death in 1996. Marilyn continued her work with the Landmark Society and many other community organizations. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and served on the Marin County Civil Grand Jury during the events surrounding the Soledad brothers in 1970. She was elected to the Reed School District Board of Trustees. In 1973, she was appointed and then elected and reelected to the Marin County Board of Education where she served for 28 years. Marilyn Steinau is survived by her sons, Paul and Ronald, and her grandchildren Alex, Sarah, Jessica and Victoria. She loved young people and devoted her life to their well-being. She was a little league coach and as a school board member she advocated for the best possible education for all children. She took special interest in the Marin County Office of Education Outdoor Education School at Walker Creek Ranch where the "Steinau Science Museum" is named in her honor. She also was a strong supporter of the Alternative Education Programs operated by the county office, including Phoenix Academy, a charter school for students committed to overcoming drug and alcohol issues. Marilyn traveled to most parts of the world and in her later years was an enthusiastic participant in the Elderhostel programs. She had many interests including being an avid bridge player. In addition to her family, she leaves behind many friends including a group whose friendships began in grade school and remained until her passing. She also helped many people and organizations, but did so anonymously. A "Celebration of Life" will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Hollis Hall at the Marin County Office of Education, 1111 Las Gallinas Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94912. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmark Society, Sunny Hills Services or the Belvedere-Tiburon Library.
