PHILIP PENDLETON

Philip Coleman ("Red") Pendleton Age 90, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2012 in Portola Valley, California, surrounded by his family. Red was raised mostly in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania; son of (Major) Alan and Marion Pendleton. He was the husband of Christine Heilman, who predeceased him in 2000, after 50 years of marriage. During the turmoil of his teen years, compounded by The Great Depression, he hopped a freight train and "rode the rails" with the transient hobos of that era, from Pennsylvania to Wyoming and again to Las Vegas, NV. Both times he made it back home safely to Pennsylvania. Along came WWII: As a tanker he reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant and served as company commander of D Company, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division. In combat, he was awarded the Silver Star during the Battle of the Buldge and the Purple Heart. After the war, Red attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in History and a minor in Political Science. In the 1950's he moved to the San Francisco bay area and, in 1960, with no prior experience or advice, started and built a successful sales agency business in the building materials industry that still flourishes today. Red relaxed in retirement by playing the occasional 9 holes, reading voraciously and volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by his children Mike Pendleton (Lynn Horigan) of Hawaii, Janet Campbell (Bob Campbell) of Oklahoma, Barbara Horigan (Lee Horigan) of Canada, and Stuart Pendleton (Stacy Genzlinger) of California, 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and his sister Anne Kunkle of Washington State.
