Gerald Down Obituary

Gerald Down
07/01/1933 - 07/05/2025
It is with deep love and admiration that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gerald Charles Down (Jerry), who passed away peacefully at the age of 92.
Born in Oakland, California, Jerry grew up in Montclair and began his journey as a spirited young paper boy, already demonstrating the work ethic and responsibility that would define his life. His early achievements included earning the rank of Eagle Scout-an honor he carried with immense pride throughout his life.
An athlete and musician, Jerry had a zest for life that found expression on ski slopes as a member of the ski patrol, on tennis courts as an avid player, and on football fields playing the trumpet in the University of California, Berkeley's marching band. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and graduated from Cal with enduring friendships and cherished memories.
While in college, Jerry was a member of the ROTC, which led to a distinguished service in the United States Air Force. As a Lieutenant and pilot flying for the 49th tactical fighter wing in various European countries, he served his country with honor and courage, embodying the values of commitment and leadership both in the skies and on the ground.
Following his military service, Jerry transitioned to a career in finance as a Stockbroker and Financial Advisor. Over the decades, he helped countless individuals and families build and secure their financial futures, earning the trust and respect of clients and colleagues alike.
Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, all of whom were equally devoted to Jerry/Papa Jerry. His love of life, sense of humor, and steadfast character touched all who knew him. He led by example, teaching those around him the value of hard work, integrity, and service to others. He believed in the mission of the Boys and Girls Club, he was a large supporter of East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring from its beginning stages, and he was a Cal Bear through and through. Jerry was also an avid dry-fly fisherman. He traveled on trips around the world with his buddies, and occasionally his son, to great fly-fishing streams. Eventually, he exchanged his tennis racquet for golf clubs. He enjoyed his time at Sharon Country Club and served as President for two years.
Some of Jerry's best years began when he married Anne, the love of his life with whom he shared more than 30 joyful years. Together, they lived a life rich in love, laughter, great friendships, wonderful trips around the world, and family.
Besides Anne, Jerry is survived by his son Eric Down and his wife Mary Kay, his daughter Julie Down, his grandchildren Kate Down Morton and her husband Brendan Morton, Nancy Down, Brian Down, his great grandchildren Will Morton and George Morton, along with his stepchildren Paul, Christian and Liz and their families.
A private/family service will be held to celebrate his remarkable life at 12:30 pm on July 22nd at the Menlo Church with a reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to Boys and Girls Club and EPATT (East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring).

I was saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. He was a true professional who always put his clients first, and I'll always remember his warm smile and contagious laugh. He will be deeply missed.
