Robert Griffin Obituary

Robert Donald Griffin

Native San Franciscan Robert Donald Griffin passed away on 13 March 2015. Born in 1930 to Donald and Nora (Conroy) Griffin, he graduated from St. Ignatius ('48) and USF ('53). Following his service in the US Army as a radio operator on Okinawa during the Korean War, he completed his MA and teaching credential at SFSU.

After teaching at Horace Mann Jr High and Galileo High School, he dedicated 33 years to CCSF, serving at times as Biology department chair, and helping to establish the biotechnology certificate program. He wrote "The Biology Coloring Book" to assist students learning key concepts by illustrating them clearly. He loved to teach, and was proud of the many students who went on to professional schools after getting their start at CCSF.

He was heavily involved with the Sea Scouts ever since joining the crew as a teenager. He served as skipper and was a long-term board member of the organization. An avid sailor, he sailed around the world aboard Good News after completing a race to Tahiti. He was active in the San Francisco Microscopical Society and volunteered as a docent at the California Academy of Sciences.

In 1964, he married Marta Esténs Sterling. She preceded him in death in 1992. He is survived by his 3 sons Kurt, Garrett, and Bruce.

A memorial mass will held at St. Anne of the Sunset, Thursday, 19 March at 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to the California Academy of Sciences. http://calacademy.org/donate

Fond memories of visiting Aunt Nora Conroy & Uncle Donald.

As well seeing Bob's sister Gail Griffin Sredanovic over the years.

Though Cousin Bob was 12 years older, he was always willing to chat when I was a child.

As a student @ CCSF it was always a delight to meet each other as we were walking the campus. Great conversations with lots of laughter.

Best of wishes to Bob's family at this sad time.

I only met your dad a few times at parties, but he was always warm and friendly and he was a great story teller. He also raised three pretty awesome sons. May he rest in peace.

When I joined CCSF as a part-timer, Bob took me under his wing. He gave me advice, encouraged me to apply for full time positions and was always there for me. I don't know who was more excited when I got the biotech full time position at CCSF, Bob or I. He will always have a big place in my heart because of how much he cared for others. He would always bubble forth with stories about his sons and his students. He was an inspiration in so many ways and an advocate for the biotech program. I will miss you Bob!

Bob mentored me when I was a new part-time instructor in the department. He was warm, kind and always available for support and advice. We stayed in touch over the years, and I am so grateful for his friendship.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Griffin. He was very kind when his former coworker, my father, Sam Carpenter, was ill. I enjoyed getting to know him during that difficult time. May he RIP.
